Whilst I don't necessarily not want to have Vreds again, as they've always performed very well for me, I am in a position to at least to a fairly extensive comparison so I fancy some BMW OEM Conti Sport Tyres.

Why then, are the Conti Sport 3s worse, according to the tyre user info chart, than the Conti Sport 2s.

Conti 2
(Fuel Eff.: E Wet Grip: B Noise Class: 1 Noise: 69dB)

Conti 3
(Fuel Eff.: G Wet Grip: B Noise Class: 3 Noise: 73dB)

Now, bar better fuel efficiency and 5% (actual as opposed to a value) less road noise of the CS2s, why would I want the CS3, which also costs more....

Funny that they CS3 is the "eco" tyre of choice on the A4.

Have to say though that they appear to offer decent levels of both wet and dry grip, and are certainly quieter than the P Zero Rosso's I had on the A6.

Yes, and theoretically at least the 5 is a little better again - though I've noticed far more of a difference between 2&3 than I have 3&5 (I can't tell any difference between the 3's and 5 whereas wet grip was improved noticably betwen 2 & 3 for me).

What will really "scramble your noodle" is looking as the EU tyre ratings for the SC5.
Look at the "unbranded" and then the "Audi" and "Mercedes" fitment. They all have different ratings. I made a post about it here a couple of months ago.

I had SC2's from the factory on my car and when I needed two new I went for SC5's. I found that all had similar noise and fuel efficiency, however the generic version of the tyre had the best wet stopping - so I went for them.

Well I switched from Bridgestone Potenza's (factory fitted) to 4x CS5's yesterday and the difference in quality is much more than I was expecting, the first thing I noticed was the dramatically reduced noise, especially at low speeds and they seem to give a slightly softer, more confortable ride as well. Really big upgrade for me.

5P is the Super Ultra Duper High Performance* variant of the 5. It's generally offered in sizes larger than the 5.

*You get the idea.

Bridgestones have stiffer sidewalls, for a more sporty drive. Conti's are an immense wet performance tyre but the sidewalls are definitely to soft for me.

The 5P has been out for some time though, so what should I get :) To be fair, can't get either in my size (not all 4 anyway), so sadly I've gone for CS3s for the next 40k miles :)

It's about as new as anything else, F1A2 has been out for a similar amount of time.

Hmmm I moved from CS3 to F1A2 and I wouldnt go back. The CS3 is what, 8ish years old now. The F1A2 has been better for me, IMHO.

So the EU ratings are useless?

I bought a set of Michelin Energy Savers for my Mondeo taxi today largely based on the fuel and dB levels. Didn't know they were a load of rubbish.

They are remarkably inconsistent. Use proper tyre tests - there can be a huge difference between two tyres with the same EU rating.
