Hello

I have removed the cover including fans from my Asus 4870x2 graphic card to clean it, as there was too much dust inside the cooling rail, however after placing fans back on the graphic card and switching computer on, 3 last LED's are flashing on graphic card and fans are running 100% (no display) I did not replace the thermal paste would it be the reason ?

You removed the entire cooler and didn't replace the thermal compound?
You may very well have killed the card.
 
I left the original compound which was still in very good condition, it takes time to overheat this card instantly went on 3 red lights.
 
Probably over tightened the non ref cooler crushing pcb components... :o

But why an earth did you not apply new paste, should always replace it, only £5.00 for small tubes.

Nope

My beloved Asus agreed to replace it under warranty.

But I still disagree, I removed the top part however all the paste was still on the gpu unit untouched so it doesn't make any difference, they paste was very solid not like to one you find on the processors.

OP - I hope you manage to get this sorted. Personally, I think if you haven't touched the compound, you should be ok. I cleaned my 4870X2 several times and never replaced the paste, and it worked fine everytime. Temps were very much lower, too. So, my first thoughts are that the paste shouldn't be the problem.

Well, there a hundreds of threats online with people getting 3 red lights on ati 4870x2, if i know i had to replace the paste i would probably leave the card alone. I had 1 fan ati 4870x2 which I got on ebay, manage to register the card for 5 years warranty, it was faulty so I send it for repair and they sent me brand new 3 fan version, which is on another 5 years warranty, in my opinion ASUS rocks.
