If you use your camera quite a lot then you'll find that the internal dcim folder may contain a large thumbnails folder. Mine was 2GB even though I store all camera captures on the sdxc card.

I noticed this some time ago however they always seem to come back (something to do with the gallery app i think?)
 
Hmm interesting, do you think it's related to the media scanner service that runs in the background perhaps? If so then this may explain why it comes back as \i don't use the stock gallery but QuickPic which has its own thumb database.
 
Possibly. But then disabling the media scanner won't work either since other apps rely on it.

Maybe it's time for you to move the photos onto something else ;).
 
Oh this is not a problem as such as you'll see from my op that I use the sd card for all media. Just nice not to have space consumed that doesn't need to be consumed and this folder fills up regardless of where the photos are kept.
