Hi all,

I have put down a deposit on a second hand car and was issued with this list of items on the sale. I have not agreed to anything yet but wanted advice on the items listed.

1.) Accesories £319 - this is the diamondbrite application. I didn't have this option on my last car so wanted to look into it at home. From some searches it looks very overpriced and the equivalent of something that I can do myself for around £30. Is this correct or am I missing something here

2.) Warranty £449. I want warranty with the car. I put the license plate ref into http://www.gocarwarranty.co.uk/ to check (I'm not sure if this is better than fords or if there are better sites) and it is a lot cheaper. Have you had any experiences with 3rd party warranty companies? Are they better/ worse than the dealerships? I have no experience of them. Last car came with 12 month warranty for free.

3.) GAP is obviously GAP insurance (again, can I get this from somewhere else?)

4.) RFL is the car tax for the year.

All of this assumes that I am trading in my current car (I think I can get £1000 more in a private sale, it's an 05 plate fiesta zetec S ) and getting finance on the rest of the car (still need to look into options and how much I want to pay off and how much finance to get)

However, I just wanted to know peoples opinions on these extras and the competing products available.

Polar Ford at j32?

Few years back they do me and the wife a great deal on our family Ford. Great base price but we told them to forget all the hideously overpriced extras. Not sure about the warranty, but diamondbrite was useless, and GAP we got for 40 quid a year online.

In general avoid all extras like that. Everything there looks very overpriced. If you want an aftermarket warranty or gap insurance or any kind of paintwork treatment shop around and get them elsewhere.

Surely the point in buying from a main dealer with an Approved Used scheme is that a warranty is included? Having to BUY the warranty from them seems madness.

Surely an £11k Focus is sub 3 years old and therefore has warranty anyway.

The gap insurance is available elsewhere for far less money! As for the paint protection don't bother!

Gap insurance from ala.co.uk comes in at £83.70 for your car value for three years!

www.ala.co.uk

Use this code for 10% off vri4434

Saves you over £300 straight away ;) and a whopping load more when you get rid of that waste of time paint protection!

Hope this is of some help :)

Thanks.

I'll get these extras elsewhere, if you have any suggestions on the best place to get GAP and warranty from then please let me know. I'll check on Money saving expert as well.

GAP, as said, use ALA.co.uk.

Warranty is the only thing I'd want from Ford directly, but as Fox said, surely the whole point of an "approved" Used car on a dealership forecourt is the fact that it comes with a comprehensive warranty as standard?

If they are making you buy a warranty, you might as well go buy a privately sold car for thousands less, and buy a warranty on top of that.

All the rest of the "options" are crap.

According to the following link, all Ford Direct approved used cars should come with a 2 year warranty as standard:

http://www.ford.co.uk/BuyingandprotectingyourFord/Warranties/Used-Car/FordDirectusedCarWarranty

Thanks for that. I have tried looking on the Polar ford website (the dealership the car is with) regarding warranties and it doesn't mention anything (unless it is really hidden). Nor can I find the description Ford Direct Approved.

Is it possible this dealership falls outside this remit? As stated, I don't have much experience of buying cars (this would be my second) but the first on did come with a warranty but it was from a small, independent dealership.

EDIT: just put my postcode into the ford website and the Polarford dealership was listed there so I assume from that the are a Ford Direct approved car seller??? You'd think if it was included it would be advertised as selling point

Yes, dump them all.

When I bought the mondeo to run around in just after christmas they presented me with an invoice that had GAP insurance (£399) on a 2k car.

I politely asked them what they thought they were doing, (this was a ford dealership) and they explained it away as something that is applied as default to all their car invoices, so i just asked for it to be removed and it was.

Its pretty shoddy to be lumping all these extras on without even asking if you want them, GAP insurance should just be refused outright at a dealership, its 5 times more expensive than buying privately.

That tempts me to look at Ford more than VW!

Suzuki added this to my quote price without me asking for it too! Ala are as good as any of the £399 rip off quotes :)

I'd be asking them about that warranty if I were you! Looks like they are trying to diddle you!

I've just had a reply from a different dealership (still polar ford) about warranty, I just wanted a second opinion.

Hi,

I have received your email regarding warranties and just wanted to
clarify some information.

Depending on what year you are looking at, we do have different
warranties. If its less than 3 years old, then it will come with a
manufacturers warranty.

Anything older then it will come with a three months warranty, but we do
offer extremely competitive and fully comprehensive extended warranties
at low prices.

If you need any further information then please give me ring on the
number below.

£13k for an ST2?

May I ask what age and how many miles? You can have my ST3 for £13k and ill throw in 3 years warranty with it!!

I would not bother with anything other than the warranty, but I'd be very interested to know: a) who provides the warranty, and b) exactly what is and isn't covered. It wouldn't surprise me if Ford are peddling something pretty crap here.

Three months? Walk away. The SOGA gives you six months protection regardless of what they say.

If they add all that rubbish, quote you a load of money that the Ford website says you shouldn't have to pay then just leave the car there!

It's £11.5k 59 plate, 30k miles in the colour I want. I think it's a fair price

Yep, good price. Just lose all the extras they are charging and don't pay any more than £11.5k. The extras which make it £13k are worthless...

It's reassuring to know the ST is still holding it's value so well :). Debating whether to sell now or keep mine for another year...

Thanks for all the advice, it's very helpful. Everything will be left off (except for the tax). I'll get everything separately but know that I don't have to look into warranty for 3 months, I spend a bit of time looking at the different levels available.

I'll ask about the Ford Direct warranty when I get there just so I know why it isn't offered at that dealership.
