Hey guys, so ive got my new rig, and although the 480 is a beasty card it is very power consuming and can be loud. A friend of mine has a 7870 2gb hes willing to trade. Worth it? Just ill be running a small case so power consumption is quite important. Plus the value, is it financially a good deal? Id benefit from displayport as my sammy sa950 has displayport.
Thanks
Ste

The 7870 will be slightly faster than your GTX 480, as well as using much less power. How much does your friend want for the 7870?

Hes willing to straight swap but as far as i was aware the 480 has more raw power? But he has an 800d and wants a block to cool and overclock the card, im happy with stock to be honest.

For a quick comparison of graphics cards I tend to use techpowerup. You may want to check out some more reviews, but I'm fairly sure the 7870 is faster than the GTX 480. If it was me, I'd go for the straight swap.

2nd hand GTX480 worth around £70; 2nd hand 7870 worth around £110-£130.

Also the 7870 is at least equal/slightly faster than the GTX480 but with much lower power consumption, lower temp and less waste heat. Also with your Samsung SA950, you'd be able to play some games (that are not too demanding) in 3D with tridef. But personally I prefer 120Hz over 3D for my Samsung SA700.

Id say the gtx 480s worth around 100 tbh, after forum trawling and ebaying and yeah the 7870 is about 130. So itd be a good deal for me and yes i ran a 7970 3gb with tridef its decent like. Cant wait to access MM so i can buy a few bits off here. Only 290 odd posts to go haha.

The 7870 will be faster; the only difference is goin got be the features for compute etc. I would bite his hand off. Which model 7870 is it? Its not going to be louder than the 480.

EDIT: 1k posts for MM?

7870 second hand are expensive due to mining :)

yeah i believe its 1000 posts to access members market, to buy./sell./swap.

And im not sure, think its an asus card, it wont be a palit or crap like that, ill find out later what model it is, but im going to push the deal like :)

I think it's a fair trade and your card is more suitable for the type of case your friend has plus if he's going to watercool it he will benefit from lower temps which in theory should mean better overclocking.

AMD based card are currently selling for a bit higher than they use to as people use them for Bitcoin Mining (Earning money number crunching) as nVidia cards are crap for it. The prices will soon drop again as the ASIC's are improving making Mining harder for anyone without decent tech!

how come? haha

You could mine, yes, it will run the card 100% so its gunna get hot. Join a mining pool. You share the payout, but get paid more frequently. As for CPU Mining, its pointless. Your CPU would mine at 5% of the speed of your GPU, while using 80% of the power.

The idea is, you have to mine to get money that covers your electricity bills for the mining components, while also paying for the components over however long you will keep the PC, while also making you a profit. If its not making a profit, you are just paying a lot of money to have a slow running PC.

If you are watercooled then people tend to do it at night while they sleep as the PC will earn some money, while being cool and quiet.

If you do not pay for your electricity and the speed you mine is enough to cover costs of components after say 1 year, 8 hours a day, and still make you a profit, then mine at night :)
