I am in need of a new GPU, I currently have a 480 SOC and I have been holding off some of my newer/more intensive games until I upgrade the GPU. The upgrade itch is now in full swing and I was seriously considering, first the 7970GHz and then the 770 GTX. At the moment the 770 seems the better buy as it beats (in most things) the AMD and is cheaper.

But, I know the 7970 is getting on now and a new card is due "sometime in 2013". With the new consoles all sporting AMD GPUs, NVidia being evil and AMD needing to counter with something, I was thinking of waiting...but the itch is quite strong :D

So what do you reckon? Upgrade, or wait? I can hold off playing the more intensive games, but sooner or later I do need to upgrade.

I want to get at least 2 years out of the GPU, so I am thinking not of just what's on the horizon, but also what's beyond it. Will all games run better on AMD? They are certainly touting BF4 as such, and is that just the tip of the iceberg?

Also, I have read a few passing comments by people that the new HD 8000/9000 range will 780 sort of prices...which is just depressing if true.

GTX 770 / 7970 are about even.

AMD have signed up with a lot of game developers to be involved with the development of a game.

That does not necessarily give AMD an advantage as Nvidia work just hard to get games running well on their GPU's.

As for the price of the HD 8K, that all depends, but AMD usually do try to provide a given performance bracket for less money than Nvidia.

The 8970 being just as expensive as the GTX 780, I highly doubt it, unless its faster.

Jono,

Did you notice a worthwhile improvement in speed?

Gregster,

I play all sorts of games, it's not really one game, type or genre. On the cards in the next few months are: Hitman Absolution, Tomb Raider, The Witcher 1&2, Borderlands 1&2, Sins of a Solar Empire, Wargame AirLand Battle, Company of Heroes 2, Minesweeper and BF4...amongst other things.

CPU is an [email protected] and 16GB of RAM.

If you are using 1080P, there will be nothing in it between the 7970 and 770. The plus for the 7970 is the free games and the plus for Nvidia is a couple of those games use PhysX. I am a stickler for the pretties in games, so PhysX would sway me but as you are coming from a PhysX card, you know what you will be getting/missing :)

I had to make this choice also and went for the 770 mainly because i play Batman and Borderlands2 for physx, from what i read both are really good cards & are very close. I even paid £20 on that auction site for the game deal you get with amd cards :)

I really like my 770gtx and don't regret it a single bit :) Runs quiet cool and very fast, was even getting 100fps+ last night on BF3 64map on average it stays well above 60fps nearer 80fps i find.

I think you will be happy either way.

I went for the EVGA SC 770gtx and its a very nice package, the MSI gaming looks nice for around same price too, the Lightning seems quite a bit faster but is 30/40£ more expensive.

Personally I went for a GTX780 and I am very pleased with it.

Running all my games at very playable rates @ 120Hz with maxed settings.

If you were running a 780 at 60Hz I don't think you would ever drop below 60 FPS in any game.

The 770 seems very respectable as well, though.

Yeah the 780 is a little pricey, it would be nice, but a bit too rich for me.

Is the Gigabyte card any good? I currently have one and I know there RMA process (having used it) is in the UK, which is handy.

So other than that, the EVGA or MSI lightning then?

I'd love to get a 780. If they were just a bit more powerful I'd sell my 7950s and get one. :)

The 780 is nice, but lack of compute is worrying though with 'next gen' games using a lot of DirectCompute stuff. With that in mind I don't think it's worth the premium, £550 is a lot for a single GPU.

Maxwell will bring back a more complete GPU that has decent GPGPU performance as well as being able to access system memory. GTX 880 would be nice and new AMD cards are only a few months away..

@ DTWD, why not grab a good deal on a 7950 / 7970 and let that tide you over until the better cards come along..

if 30% faster than a 7970 ghz overclocked means a lack of directcompute support in the poster child for directcompute (tombraider) then bring on maxwell lol :D

Boomstick,

This is just it, I want my next card to be my card for the next few years. I don't like swapping and changing and selling them on in the hope to make up the difference to the next one.

I prefer to just to find a good card and stick with it. Take my 480 SOC, it cost me about £200...what, 3 years ago? And it's been a great card and is still capable of running most things. But the heat and noise are a constant reminder that I should change.
