Help regarding holiday allowance at work and ****head managers

Hi, I recently started a job at a large pub chain a month and abit ago. In and before my interview I stated I had planned holiday, I also double checked with a manager it was there which it was. As its coming up I'm now put to work on the days I was ment to be off. They are now saying I have to find someone to cover my shifts (4 days of full time) and if not I'll have to be there I'm a student with no money and saved for a while to go away with house mates. Is there anything I can do? Shouldn't I be entitled to this holiday?

I posted this ( if anyone was wondering) here as overclockers has always had a diverse and supportive community.
 
If you stated it at your interview then I don't see how they can enforce you to work it?

Terms and conditions are usually "you will work whatever days and hours you are told, subject to change without notice at any time". Even if it doesn't explicitly state that in the contract, it will probably be that in effect. In recent years, it has become common for employers to use that power at will.
 
Can't really name but if you can help I can send a pm. I know I should change jobs but its not as easy as that, I need the income. I'm looking for other jobs while working. So is there nothing legal that supports me with this?

Yea but its plain common sense if someone you are interviewing says they are away between x and x and you agree to give them a job knowing that...you dont ask them to work those days...

I started a new job 3 months ago and told the interviewer every Thursday after 8pm I will be unavailable as I play 5 a side. After I got the job and met my manager I confirmed it with her and that I had mentioned it in the interview too, and as she is really cool she will never ask me to work on Thursday evenings! SO yea I guess as mentioned...find another job!
 
Can you not escalate above the managers head ? or ask HR what their policy is for covering leave of absence - I would frame along the lines of who is responsible for finding cover for shifts during annual leave, is it the employee or the manager

If HR's response is that it's down to the employee then I would be looking for alternate employment as the company management structure clearly is not there to support their staff.

Just sounds like the manager can't be bothered to rejig the rotor and wants you to do it. If you don't want to ruffle feathers then can't you try and get others to cover it?

Otherwise tell him straight but without attitude that you made him aware of the holiday on two occasions and was told it wouldn't be a problem and not to expect you at work those days.

Sounds like you haven't been there long and bar work isn't hard to find, line up another job for when your back from holiday and quit on your last shift.

Tell them you're happy to work those hours, as long as the company are willing to reimburse all cancellation costs incurred by both you and the people you were planning to go away with, along with compensation for the distress and inconvenience this has caused you.

Once they've done this, call in sick on those days anyway, claiming stress as you haven't had a holiday in years and the pressure is getting to you.
 
not much you can do. they can hire your replacement easily enough. you're on probation so they'll just get rid of you if you start causing trouble
 
I used to threaten to quit my job all the time when my employers were iffy about holidays. It's a student job in a pub. Go on holiday, come back and keep working. If they don't want you anymore, find another job.
 
Tell them that they were fully aware of this holiday at the interview and it is their responsibility to find someone to work the shifts. Honestly, show them you have balls otherwise they will treat like dirt until the day you leave.
 
They hired you knowing you had pre existing holiday commitments and are now trying to make you either work them or find a replacement to cover your shift? Tbh I would tell the manager that you were hired in full knowledge of these holidays and you will be taking them and you expect to be paid for them if you have enough holiday pay to cover for them.
