Gta 5 choppy on the ps3

I have an xbox 360 and have the game installed to USB. It's choppy at times. People that say it's running 'flawlessly' probably don't understand how FPS works. Gta V is definitely on the lower end when it comes to FPS. I'd say on average it runs about 30, for perfect smoothness you need a constant 60.

Drops to as low at 16 in places, it's not great especially if you're used to games on PC at 60+. Still a really enjoyable game despite that though.

I game on a 144hz screen with a 780 and I can't say I've noticed any choppyness on my PS3 super slim. Sure it doesn't look as smooth but it hasn't been choppy.

I have a feeling this is no more than a case of playing on PS3 after being used to gaming on pc (I'm assuming at a decent level of detail and performance?). Without more info I would say no fault, that's just how it is. The disc spins like mad on mine as well, all the time (new 500gb slim model) and the game is running at below 30fps WITH framerate dips, no way it can't feel choppy to anyone used to playing on a decent pc.

The game is good enough that it is easily worth the compromise though.

Sounds to me like the OP has a faulty HDD, tons of the super slims have been shipped with them. Best bet is to swap it for a 2.5 inch Samsung setpoint. I bought the 500GB super slim and GTA V bundle and it's silky smooth. Granted the framerate dips to the low twenties in the worst of cases but there are zero stutters or issues due to faulty hardware or bad optimisation.

I suggest that the OP gets it exchanged for a new console, or spend £40 on a 250GB Spinpoint.

360 version of Gta has a more stable framerate.

That's due to a much lower LOD distance. It seems Rockstar tried to take advantage of the PS3's somewhat superior hardware by upping the LOD and ended up overdoing it and instead of being slightly prettier for the same performance, they went a few paces too far and dipped a little below the Xbox on performance. This is why the Xbox version suffers from bad asset and texture pop in, whereas the PS3 doesn't.

It's the first case I've heard of though with a multiplat title actually attempting to bring out a superior product on the Playstation. Playstation usually gets the worst of the multiplats due to it's fiddly architecture.

I have a ps3 slim and the FPS certainly isn't high. I think the word 'choppy' can be interpreted differently by different people so this may be the cause of confusion with some people.

For me it's like a blu-Ray film. It's not choppy in a severe sense, but if the camera pans round or something you can see the very small, quick stutters of 24fps. This is what I experience with GTA. I honestly think some people just can't see it.

I was playing GTA 4 on the PC before starting GTA 5 on the PS3 and I did notice some iffy frames at first. After playing it for a week though without playing on a PC for comparison, I don't really notice it any more.

I play on a PC at smooth frame rates all the time. GTAV runs fine on my PS3 slim.

Same.

I'm used to very high frame rates and highest possible GFX settings. I've had absolutely no problem playing GTAV on my Super Slim, it's been very enjoyable.

I purchased my bundle from Game on Tuesday evening.

If I box it all up and take it back this evening will they exchange or have I got a small battle on my hands!?

That's when running both off the hard drive. If you run Disc 2 off the disc or a USB you don't get the pop in.

Really? It's all over the web at that the PS3 was the lead platform and that Rockstar was going to take advantage of it's enhanced power. Mislead by fanboys perhaps? :o

Seen quite a few people on the Playstation forums exchanged theirs in at game and they had no issues. There is a small chance though that the replacement may be the same, as stock moves in waves and stores tend to get several from the same batch. Worth a shot though, if they next ones buggered just try a new 2.5 HDD.

Not sure if it is really on the same vein, but on my crappy old xbox arcade, if i am to drive in a car very fast, it does take a good 4-5 seconds for textures to load. I wouldn't say its choppy, but you a untextured tree coming up and its only until you get very close to it does it display right. Then again in sure its pulling of files from the hard drive and disc, and both of mine are pretty dodgy.

Some of the cutscenes are not that smooth either.

Only had a quick scan of all posts so not sure mentioned yet, but don't overlook something really important here

Your TV settings

As a mainly PC gamer used to tweaking and faffing rather than playing ;) I spent a good half day on GTA5 launch day last week fannying around with everything, as I too wasn't happy with the fps and general stuttery feel (xbox 360 version by the way).

Modern TVs play a fair part in your console 'smoothness' experience these days, particularly any 'motion' settings/ options you may have.

My 360 is hooked up to a Samusing 46" LED smart TV that has all sorts of motion settings in the picture setup menus. If I have 'smooth motion' activated GTA5 is incredibly smooth, feels like 60fps+, seriously, but only for about 5 or 10 seconds then it will do a massive hitch or series of stutters. Really disappointing as it has so much potential.

I found I have to set my TV into specific Game Mode in a sub menu to get GTA5 to play half decent. This mode essentially disables all motion options and a few others, and is supposed to be better for input lag (totally different to what I think you are getting, ie stuttering, hitching etc?)
With my TV in game mode, to my practised frames per second obsessed PC eye, it feels like GTA 5 runs at 30fps max which feels smooth when it does, but dips to around 20 or so at times, and has the odd stutter or hitch, especially when driving. But then many pc games exhibit this type of stutter, independent of frame rate, too.

I also have the play disk installed on a fast USB stick, but I honestly don't think this makes any real difference to fps or any minor stutters I still get. I get zero texture issues or pop up with this now though, and my old Elite disk drive isn't buzzing away which is a bonus.

its just a lack of fps, it clearly runs at 30 sometimes under that- if your not used to console gaming that can be massively jarring, especially because of the complete lack of AA making objects smooth.

True, it is a simple lack of fps for most. But, it's worth highlighting the fact that many modern flat screen TVs now have some sort of motion control settings, and that as I've found these can really affect your gaming. Some may not be aware of this so it's worth pointing out.

The OP used the word 'choppy', and this is how GTA5 is for me on my TV unless I completely disable all motion smoothing.

If you're coming from PC then you probably just have too high standards, 360/PS3 struggle to maintain a steady 30fps in GTA4/5 never mind a solid 60fps, you just have to get used to the inconsistent frame rates.

Also, the new slims do make a bit more noise reading from disc (or are just more audible), whirring noises etc.
