AMD Radeon R9 290X Battlefield 4 Edition – Only 8,000 and No Specs For Pre-Order

No no no.... AMD bad AMD very very bad!

+1

There is no way I would buy without knowing the specs/performance.

If the R9 290X is even 1% slower than what I have already for me it is totally useless. On the otherhand if it was 5% or more faster (overclocked) I would be very interested indeed.

I know some people are saying that if AMD published the specs/performance/price it would give NVidia the chance to respond, this only makes sense if NVidia had something to respond with. As to pricing NVidia could adjust it on the R9 290X launch day and spoil the party. Worse still they could do it now and for the next three weeks and sell the GTX 780 for 450.00 pounds just to dry up any 290X pre orders.

Personally i don't have the money atm to buy a gtx780 or 290x but if i did mantle would be enough for me to not go near a gtx780 as it sounds like in bf4 the titan is gonna get stuffed never mind the gtx780.

@Kaap i think Nvidia already have a very capable card or 2 in titan/gtx780 to effect the launch. Still i think amd should get the numbers out as blind buying is only good for the rich.

What I was getting at is as you say NVidia already have the GTX 780/Titan out there and there are no more cards waiting in the wings that they can spring as a surprise to spoil AMDs party.

That leaves prices, this is something NVidia can change very quickly. With that in mind AMD really have nothing lose announcing their prices now, even if AMD hold out untill there is product to sell NVidia can still react to it the same day.

I won't be buying blind, I am definately not rich.:D

I know this an exaggeration but what if you pay your deposit and then they release it at something like £700?! Unless you don't value your money at all, you would be mad to give a company a deposit when you don't know what the final price will be. It is absurd.

even ferrari tell you how fast its going to be before they take your money!
i bet they sell out fast anyway tho, a lot spoilt computer users out there!
maybe there will be another 10,000 limited after that then... :p

Wow... i can see people buying it without fully knowing the specs, as some people will just want the fastest AMd gpu period. and with BF4

but not even knowing the price when you preorder?
in a world where top end gpus go from 500-1000?
no thankyou.

A very poor showing from AMD here, but I have no doubt that those 8000 units will sell out quickly. I do fear that this could lead to a dangerous precedent being set across the whole of the GPU industry for future releases.

As for wanting to keep the specs away from Nvidia, haven't cards already been sent out to reviewers and selected overclockers (8 Pack)? If so chances are that Nvidia already know how it performs and may even have have a card sat in their testing lab.

Earlier this week we told you that AMD would be releasing a limited edition Radeon R9 290X Battlefield 4 video card. AMD Corporate Vice President of the Graphics Business Unit, Matt Skynner, said that limited quantities of the Radeon R9 290X Battlefield 4 Edition card will be available for pre-order only, starting October 3 with select partners.

What we have learned since bringing you that news is that AMD will be releasing a grand total of 8,000 AMD Radeon R9 290X Battlefield 4 Edition cards. This means globally and not just regionally! We also learned that the cards specifications and the final price of the card will not be disclosed when the pre-order begins. This means that you’ll have to put down a deposit without knowing the price or clock speeds of the card that you will be purchasing. This is a very interesting and something we’ve never seen done before in recent times. To top that off only certain Add-In board partners will be offering it.

Wow, AMD fail. If anyone falls for that I'll laugh my ass off.

Price points and specs would still enable Nvidia to respond though. The specs would give Nvidia a guestimate of performance of the R9 290X,together with the price, would mean they will know whether to cut prices,or bundle more stuff with their current cards, before AMD has cards available in retail.

I would expect this time,AMD would make sure reviews are close to actual retail availability of the R9 290X. This is unlike with the HD7970.

Moreover, another factor is AMD wants to shift its current HD7000 series cards in stores,as the R7 and R9 series are being launched at virtually the same time.

Maybe you misread what I posted.

If that is what AMD are doing, then why on earth didn't they just hold the event and say ok here are the specs and the cards are available now at this price.

It would be a bit dificult for Nvidia to respond before the cards are launched if they had of launched them at the announcement.

Whichever way round AMD do it or should have done it, as soon as prices and performance is announced, availible or not Nvidia can respond. So much better to show your full hand and let people buy them rather than all this stupid cloak and dagger stuff.

So many rumours and misinformation about the R9 290X launch.

Was it ever AMDs idea in the first place.

I'm sure it was in the presentation that they'd take pre-orders on the 3rd. They never said that it'd be without price or specs though.

Has AMD dropped this idea? There's been no mention of it since.

The 384Bit bus seems to have been misinformation, more recent leaks / benchmarks still have it at 512Bit.

I think AMD would be daft to put these on sale without specs and price info.
