new gaming pc, or wait for xbox/ps4

Around the ps4 and xbox unveiling (which actually unveiled very little), microsoft announced that second hand games and trade ins will require an extra fee to play and also required a 24/7 internet connection. From the recent talk of the town, i hear that they have abandoned the idea after quite a lot of complaint potential buyers.

After seeing the specs, the release prices and xbox's trade in policy (which i think is now abandoned), the choice of which console to get was an easy decision.

I did consider a console but i always liked the way PC multi-player 'feels' compare to consoles. I cant really explain why it feels different (probably because its all in my head and there is no difference) but with this in mind i have manage to sort of resist the temptation of buying with the intention of keeping it.

Due to my work discount, i get 20% off the consoles, so have pre-ordered a PS4 with the intention of reselling it at higher price when desperate parents are looking to spoil their kids at the last minute before Christmas. If i cant sell it, i will just keep it without the guilt of splashing out for my own entertainment ;).

ps4 all the way no pc can compare at £350 ,

only reason i choose ps4 over xbox one is better spec and the next gen ddr5 ram unlike xbox one who are sticking with ddr3

but the ps3 uses unified ram for the little 8gb as to be used for all parts not just gfx.

where as the xbox is supposed to have system ram and gfx ram

True but it is one thing for a PC which runs a OS not designed for gaming and many other background processes to run out of RAM and another thing for a console to run out of RAM. I think 8gb is plenty.

I do expect to see the option of upgrading xbox parts later in the consoles life though. After market coolers for the current Xbox may not be popular but they are available, it would be nice if the next gen consoles parts could be replaced with higher spec parts after games become more demanding.

Anyone forgetting that you have to subscribe to play online with consoles (you will with the new ps4 as well if im not mistaken)

£40 * 8years = £320

That is assuming only one person using it for online.
Not hating, I had a 360 with a gold sub for a long time.

Never going to happen. there just not made to be up-graded. you want to up-grade stuff buy a pc. you want something that just turns on a plays games buy a console.

I'm sure he means like the larger HDD's you could buy and add yourself, other hardware is extremely unlikely - plus it would void the warranty.

PC for less than £360 that will play 720 with ease.

YOUR BASKET
1 x MSI HD 7790 OC 2048MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card £99.95

1 x Western Digital Caviar Blue 500GB SATA 6Gb/s 16MB Cache - OEM (WD5000AAKX) HDD £41.99
1 x MSI 760GM-P23 FX AMD 760G (Socket AM3+) DDR3 Micro-ATX Motherboard £35.99
1 x Antec VP350P 350W '80 Plus' Continuous Power Supply £32.99

1 x OcUK USB Keyboard - Black £4.99
1 x Blaze M2051 Optical Notebook Mouse - Silver/Black £3.95
Total : £372.32 (includes shipping : £11.25).

And when people say, "well you will need to upgrade it every year etc etc" well, thats your choice.

if you dont want to upgrade, you can still play the latest games, just not at a high setting.

if you have a xbox one, the games, gfx, etc etc, will look the same for the next 8 years. and to be honest, it will look **** in 8 years time.
but with a pc you can upgrade your PC to make games looks sweet :D

but at the end of the day, its personal opinion. if you prefer PC over xbone or ps4, then good on you, and visa versa.

its a endless argument.

and how do you play with out an £80 cope of windows. spec budget fail
Most games need over 4gb of ram now so..... you need more.
and new games are wanting 6 cores+ so again..... an FX quad is now out dated so in 8 years?

i said games in 720/1080, the consoles that are out now game at 720, the new consoles will run at 1080, so i would want 1080 smooth for 8 years no you saying just turn down settings.

My 1c incoming...

From what I saw at the Gaming Expo in Earls Courts two weeks ago, the PS4 will provide a great gaming experience. However you cannot beat a good PC. I believe that the new console architecture allows better cross platform porting so it is feasible for the differences between PC and console to be blurred. God I hope not. I would answer the question simply have you ask yourself if gaming at the best it can be, within reason, is your goal. If it is, buy a good PC. If not then get a console. Easy to transport and it shouldn't fall over. my LAN circle all have £1000+ PC's but getting them motivated to transport them somewhere is difficult. We all have PS3’s as well, so usually meet up with those. Being in the same room as your fellow gamers is a bonus, except when the shouting and brick throwing starts. :)

This set of consoles is said to last for around 10 years though.

I highly doubt that. No doubt the systems themselves will still be running by then, but as a business Sony/MS will be looking to release new consoles every ~ 5-6 years.

OP, for that budget, if you can stand playing a fps with a controller then go with the consoles. If you can't, then stick with the PC. Simple as that.

epic fail :D..

i blame been half asleep this morning :)

and what about second hand ?

my pc is a fx6300 with a 7850 and 8gb 1600 corsair xms3 ram.
1tb hdd, huge cooling case, keyboard and mouse, and monitor/tv.

i could pick my system up for about 350-400 if i looked hard enough.
and id like to think my system will last 8 years.. (id like to think.. :D)

yh the xbox has sram i think it called 32mb ,but it still ddr3 next gen console with old ram not sure why they did that but guess we see would be very interesting if they could be bench marked against each other

i also have an fx chip and i feel it not holding it own now and within 12 months better will be needed.

i get what your saying about buying used but lets say there is 20,000,000 consoles games they cant all buy used.

i have
FX -6100
2 x 460 GTX's
8gb xms3

it cost me well over a 1,500 within the last 2 years and it cant max out games now. the 8year life is not looking good.

I would say if you have the cash for pc gaming do it it soo much better then my xbox 360 as ever been. but that said if you dont have 1,000 to blow now and cash for yearly upkeep buy a console it will serve you well. my console was used to play on as my pc was dont on a month my month build (payday build). and the plan was to sell the xbox after the build but i now use both they both have strong sides.

Yeah, I am a little confused about your rational regarding 'having' to upgrade every year/2 years on the PC.

The PS3, which has been out for however long now, gets 25 FPS in some games. I wouldn't exactly call that 'smooth' gaming! You won't be able to upgrade the PS4/Xboxone, so whatever package they come out with will have to last 8 years. In 8 years time the graphics will look outdated and terrible compared to high end PC's. The graphics on a £500 ish PC will look terrible in 8 years as well most likely. So, I fail to see exactly where the difference is.

Basically, the PS3 and Xbox 360, imo, were about a 18 months 'overdue'. I think this is as long as console gamers have waited between the release of an updated machine, so again your 8 year 'plan' is about 3 years too long (the time between the release of each console has been about 6 years), technology moves along too fast for even consoles to wait for an 8 year development cycle.

And, then factor in the complete cluster f that was the red lights on the Xbox360 and the PS3 issue of cooling until the slim model came out, if they went bang after the first year there goes all your money.

I have no axe to grind. I have pre-ordered and will get the PS4. I like gaming on console's. Pick up and play with my kids or mates, it's great. However, it is not as cheap as people make out, and after about 4 years graphically it looks outdated compared to a half decent PC.

I would hardly say they look awful :p the level of graphics and performance that developers have managed to achieve on such old hardware is nothing short of spectacular. I know consoles are bespoke, but I'd really like to see a 6-8 year old PC run games with the same visual quality of games like The Last of Us, God of War: Ascension, GTA V, etc.

And really, if someone is buying a console for graphics alone, they're definitely doing something wrong. Consoles have their own advantages of not having to be upgraded to last an entire generation, and the games aren't really that much more expensive than PC games (the difference in price is usually only £5-10, or even less with deals), sure it might be for a little while as the next generation dawns on us, but there are plenty of sales that rival Steam's prices, and services like PS+ give you excellent value for money and may even provide enough games for some people to play that they don't have to buy anymore than what they get.

Consoles provide different games too - the exclusives on consoles tend to appeal a lot more to me (but that's not to say the PC doesn't have its share of incredible games), so it's not like one system is clearly better than the other as the games come down to preference.

to be honest in 6-8 years when pc release yet more newer stuff there has to be a point where people realize the human eye can only see so much and we will not need to upgrade as often
