The "maximum bang per buck" £1.5k challenge

They are fine if done properly, with the rev 2's what can really catch people out is the lack of abs and ever so slightly twitchier handling especially that thing with different shocks and what looks like non staggered wheels

£1.5k = worn out old car

£1k + £500 worth of bits and pieces = something half usable

This.

If you have a £1500 budget you need to think in terms of buying a "project" for somewhat less and spending the difference on making it work!

£1500 "Off the shelf" is unlikely to end up well! (It might do, but it is unlikely!)

So link us to this E39 you'd rather have?

Sorry, no links but plenty on AT,Ebay if you want to go look.

Would rather have neither of the 2 but if it was to be an old beemer with a bit of luxury, it would be the E39. Nicer and more modern looking.

I own an xj8 on lpg and imo it doesnt really fit the bang for buck category. ive had a few bill crop up, tyres and servicing cost a lot compared to a lot of other vehicles and services are required quite frequently especially for the higher mileage cars if you want it to remain reliable. Plus even on gas its not that economical I average about 18mpg with a lot of motorway miles, albeit half the price. Having said that it has been a fantastic work horse which i have abused and sank thousands of miles into, it was comfortable, enjoyable and hasn't cost a fortune to run.

If i compare it to the Toyota Soarer i had owned before that had a much better 'bang for buck' and was a superior v8 cruiser imo. It had more toys, much more conformable on the air suspension, it was really reliable and parts were super cheap.also fuel consumption was a reasonable mid to high 20's

I think overall bang for buck at the moment would be something like an e36 or mx5.

As for the definition of "bang" - its whatever you consider to be most 'bang'. Fast, comfy, good fuel economy, nice looks....whatever it is that YOU consider to offer most bang per buck. No set definitions here, just the most/best car for the money.

This challenge, is it purely a drag race or a B Road thrash or a commute up the M1

We probably should have asked what sort of bang we were looking for for our buck
