I've got a friend looking for a high end gaming laptop.

He is a physician in the USA and moves hospitals every week so a desktop right now is way out of the question.

His budget is up to $5000 (so £3000 equivalent) And he doesnt mind about weight and chunkyness. Its more like a mobile desktop for him.

He doesnt want to have something thats going to overheat a lot. So something reliable.

We've been looking at specs for laptops and want advice on the best bits to look for. He mostly plays the ArmA series of games so a strong CPU will certainly help. He also wants a decent size SSD.

Obviously with him being in the US using OcUK links wont be too helpful so I'm mainly looking for a spec list and also perhaps a list of things to avoid.

The razor blade looks quite decent, but I can imagine there are heat issues with something that compact. It lacks the 780M 4Gb too where as other laptops at that price point generally have the bigger GPU. BUt i'm a little unsure of the real world differences between a 765m/780m

So basically some advice on the best CPU/GPU to aim for in a laptop, and reputable manufacturers with good track record and good customer support.

Thanks for your time.

I have the perfect desktop replacement:

Sager NP8295 (Clevo P177SM)

from xoticpc (American company)

I recommend you configure it on the basis of:

- 4th Generation Intel® Haswell Core™ i7-4930MX (3.0GHz - 3.9GHz, 8MB Intel® Smart Cache)

-NVIDIA® GeForce™ GTX 780M (4.0GB) GDDR5 PCI-Express DX11

This can be configured further to your preference.

Hope I helped!

No disrespect to the poster above me but I wouldn't recommend the Razer Blade at those prices when it comes with a 765m graphics card. For gaming laptops, the graphics card is what's most important and for that of budget without compromising, he should be looking for something with either a 780m in it or an 8970m. I have an alienware and definitely would recommend them however they are pricey. MSI do great gaming laptops too which I'd also recommend. Anyway, not sure if I'm allowed to post external sites however seeing as the site is US based, don't see any problems. Anyhow, the website I recommend is xoticpc.com, they allow you to customize the laptop in the cart, this will allow your friend to choose a better processor if he so desires however the default processor on my recommendations should be more than sufficient.

http://www.xoticpc.com/msi-gt70-2od039us-dragon-edition-p-5771.html - striking design and solid all round on default specs

http://www.xoticpc.com/alienware-780m-p-6289.html?wconfigure=yes - Solid specs, I have the R4 version of this model and definitely would recommend Alienware if price isn't an issue.

http://www.xoticpc.com/alienware-sli-780m-p-6539.html?wconfigure=yes - 2 x 780ms is about as good as it gets for gaming on a laptop however being honest, a single 780m will play everything on max settings.

Only other recommendation would be to choose the CPU and GPU paste option, well worth the extra money and will help keep them extra cool to stop any overheating issues.

Go for the Sager NP8295 (Clevo P177SM) - it has the best cooling - 4 fans
Everything is upgradable so it can be more futureproof.

The P170 & P177SM have dual fans, there is no room in the chassis for 4 fans. (I have a P170SM based laptop with 780M).

Do you possible mean the larger P3x range of Clevo chassis?

At the £3K mark I would want a dual 780m/4930XM combo (perfectly do-able for the price, especially in the US).

Yes I meant the large Clevo chassis - the bigger the better the cooling capacity. One similar to this one:

It even contains a desktop processor. Ultimate desktop replacement...

Great replies guys thank you, this is exactly the stuff we're looking for!

My last question i think would be, 8970m or 780m?

We mostly play Arma2/3 which is in general CPU bound and tends to prefer Nvidia. That said I use a 7970 and mostly AMD cards in the past and its always been great.

So basically whichever one brings the best performance?

Edit: holy cow these things take SLI/Crossfire! This things gonna be faster than my desktop!

Yep go for the GTX 780m and SLI if it fits within your budget - it will be faster than your 7970 if you do decide to SLI.
