I took on a grey haired frenchman about 18 months ago as a Linux SysAdmin/Web Ops. I never have dared ask his age, I'd say mid to late 40's though.
How about applying for some other data modelling jobs while you are actually there. Good interview practice and might restore your confidence in yourself.
If you're worried surely you can speak to your line manager about it and discuss training? Any respectable firm should be willing to invest in their staff.
Does no one think the IT route is best?
I'm more asking from a point of view of if I can ever expect a decent wage going that route?
My partner is going to go for it if I don't and i see her eventually coming off better than me!

IT Service Desk is a dead end, unless there are clear opportunities for progression and learning within the company. If not, you'll just end up serving years on SD, treading water, then have to move to another company to do exactly the same thing all over again.
