London set to ban older cars.

China and us do not affect our air quality significantly. Inner city pollution is almost entirely are own doing. and china and America are actually doing a lot fir CO2 reduction. China has one of the biggest nuclear building programs.

It will be our problem if they cause a change to the global climate!

And it's all well building nuclear, but they're also adding more new coal powered stations as well.

Why on earth would you drive into the centre. Why would you pay the congestion charge, drive to the outskirts and get public transport in, that way you avoid any sub schemes.

Weekends are a prime time to drive in as there is no congestion charge!m This is normally when I take the family!

Why are people saying things like cleaner air, yes please? when they live in coventry?
A) Theres nout wrong with the air in the very very centre of this area.
B) the cars that live in this area are only used very rarely.
So really, The issues are buses, Which are all being replaced for hybrids, albeit slowly.
Trucks (Not enough of these are hyrbid are they, wtf is that about?)
Passing traffic.

So if this really is an idea why not limit to to people who dont live within a 5 miles radius of the area?
Instead of penalisiong those who live there

Slightly OT, but Glaucus, when the EU fined Microsoft, who did you side with?

I'll say it - I do agree with you there. I don't agree with this rule but really, there's little point in taking a car into central London unless it's an utter necessity. The PT system there is very good, far better than most of the UK.

It's cheaper and far more practical for me to take my family into London in a car than it is for us all to get on a train. When the kids were younger then getting a couple of prams and all the baggage that goes with it onto a train was a nightmare. We only had an older car at that point so this new "tax" will hurt young families.

To be fair Hades, I'd consider that an utter necessity. Which is why I don't agree with the rule - there are cases where you need to take a car into London. I think people should be given the choice, rather than forced out of the city.

Sounds good to me. I also think they should make the outer lane of motorways a no go zone for the poor.

^ Agreed, they should introduce Russian style ZIL lanes, and force the lower orders to walk...............without shoes...........on separate pavements, they dont deserve to drive, especially in 10 year old tatty A3 TDi's.

Doesn't this mean that they'll be a sudden drop in prices of offloaded cars from those in central London? Whilst I have no interest in a lot of the dross, might also include some nice 911s and similar?

And exactly how would this be enforced?

Militant cyclists will patrol the borders, any old cars driving in will get a smack on the side, anyone trying to escape will get chased down by red light jumping cyclist.

On a more serious note, they already have the infrastructure from the congestion charging, so they can use the same cameras and fine cars with old plates.

Is there a magic barrier that stops pollution from outside the zone entering it?

And I do like the governments opinion that pollution can be solved with money.

If your going to ban cars ban all of them. Picking arbitrary years as cut offs doesn't solve the problem and just angers people. So under this scheme an 80g/km Polo from 2013 would be banned from the centre, but a 300g/km Range Rover Diesel from 2015 would be allowed in for a fee? Way to go on the environment saving there!

Also, how big is the current truck Low Emissions Zone? Pretty big isn't it? Wouldn't pushing this out to that zone basically ban anyone with an old car from driving inside the M25?

When has the government ever done anything that makes sense? The whole congestion charge scheme was sold on the basis of cutting congestion, yet that isn't the case at all, you pay to sit in congestion, and cars with low emissions are exempt so the streets within the zone fill up with, all they do is make up stats from the air to justify it all.

It's probably just another stealth tax to fund 'The City'.
