more like price drop

thankfully availability of 290/290x is getting better - so will be a tough market for it

still tempted it one instead of a 780Ti though :)

The price of 280X and 290's has gone up in the last week or so again, not down.

A bit more and the 280X is getting on for averaging £300, silly money. Its creeping up that way.

Its not about supply, its about demand which is very high, 70% of don't even want them for gaming, most of them just getting stuck into a mining rig.

It is about supply, it always boils down to supply.

My backorders with board partners is standing at over 5000 cards, if I did not have backorders and could have whatever stock I needed when I want it, we'd hammer the prices down and go for volume.

Right now I can't do that otherwise we'd be sold out.

well price of 290s seems to have dropped a fair amount the last few weeks - for instance the Tri-X was averaging 370-390 2 weeks ago

now averaging more like 340-350

290 stocks are much better, hence our lower prices. :)

280/280X is incredibly short and were not even giving discount for bulk orders and they still buy them.

funny that people are still buying 280x over 290s with the reducing price difference

but the customer is always right - so there you go

Supply relates to demand, its because they are selling so many that they are in short supply.

I understand it, i'm still not happy about it as mining has artificially pushed them over whats affordable for gaming, there is a £130 difference between the 270X and 280X, my GPU is a Tahiti LE which more powerful than the 270X and cost £173 a year ago. if i could have afforded a 7970 then i would have bough one then, what we have now is 7970's at 7970's prices. so i'm stuck with a 2GB Tahiti until the next generation by the looks of it.

I didn't expect to be paying 7970 prices for a 7970 2 years later, much to expensive for what they are today.

People are paying £200 for used 2 year old 7950's on the Bay, its insane. the sooner NV Maxwell destroys AMD for mining performance the better, let them gain ~£100 over RRP and bring AMD's back to normality.

Power consumption maybe, but yes we have some 290's at £299, for the gamer they are a right bargain, top card, one is even a custom design. :)

Prices should be:-

250X - £75-£90
265 - £109
270 - £130
270X - £150
270X 4GB - £169
280 - £179-£199
280X - £219-£259
290 - £319-£359
290X £399-£499

Is where prices should be without shortages etc. Some cards are there, but cards like 280/280X are not, if/when supply improves they will be but the shortages will probably last until around May/June.

Cracking price on an AIB cooled 290 Gibbo. £60 cheaper and faster than a reference 780.

nowhere near fast enough, it maxes out at 1125 on air? They avvin a giraffe!

It maxes out at 1180, not 1125.

14.1 and 14.2 beta drivers are known to have a potential powertune bug. Essentially powertune has zero effect and the cards throttle with added voltage.

For example my R9 290X can reach 1220 core clock with + increased voltage using 13.12 drivers. The same card and settings with 14.x Betas are slower than stock, getting 900-1000MHz due to severe throttling. With 14.x drivers I have to stick at ~19mV to reach 1120 core clock, any more volts and the card will throttle. Simply re-installing 13.12 allows me to overclock right up to 1220 again.

Any review using 14.x betas should be taken with a pinch of salt as far as overvolting/overclocking is concerned. There are far too many people seeing this bug and IMHO it renders any R9 290/X overclocking results with 14.x betas as suspect. The recent HardOCP XFX DD 290X Overclocking review showed the exact symptoms I mention here. Not once did the alarm bells ring when they got a measly extra 5MHz (yes that's a five) with overvolting. 1110 stock voltage and 1115 with added voltage, they just said the hardware and cooler couldn't cope in the review. Yet when I pointed out that 14.x had this bug Brent said I was spreading FUD.

I have tested 5x R9 290/X cards and the max overclocks range from 1160 - 1220.
