Get off the phone and DRIVE

One scenario that annoys me is people in posh cars that you know will have the full hit handsfree system but don't use it.

Thats stupid.

Dunno why so many people have sympathy for her while reading through this topic.

Imagine if it was a family walking on the stretch of sidewalk she hit at 55mph instead of a refuse truck?

Thankfully it was only her who lost out here. Selfie inflicted indeed.

It cracks me up when you see people driving with the phone on hands-free held up to their mouth. they think its legal as long as its not up at their ear.

Shame she is dead for being stupid, she was quite pretty

At least her stupid actions didn't take someone else with her.

I am glad nobody else was hurt, but I am sad for the others involved and the ones left behind.

In a lot of states in the US, driving and using a mobile phone is perfectly legal. So she was probably not breaking the law, even if her actions were a little bit silly.

Whilst I struggle to find too much sympathy for her, I would also say that death is a little harsh. We don't sentence those caught in this country to death do we? Likewise there are many similar incidents attributed to lapses in concentration, which lets face it, is the root cause.

If it isn't mobile phones, it is car stereos, babies in the back, attractive women on the footpath, or rubber necking at an incident on the opposite carriageway. But because a phone was involved we all turn into a mob of pitchfork waving judges, foaming at the mouth.

I think this is a harsh lesson and she paid the ultimate price. The same as the woman who had a head on with a HGV because she was distracted by her child in the back seat. They both ended up dead. Did either of these women deserve to die? I don't think they did myself, but that is just me.

Lets face it, every person who has ever driven a car has had a near miss, or a lapse of concentration, or done something out of character or silly at some point. To judge someone so harshly because you got away with it and they didn't is a little hypocritical in my opinion.

Using a mobile phone may be legal, in some states but that law doesn't cover taking pictures of yourself whilst driving :p

I'd say the distracted mother didn't deserve to die, but the woman taking a selfie whilst driving? Sheer stupidity.

Lapse of concentration, yes. Taking a picture and uploading it? No.

Which can be done in a few seconds with only a couple of screen taps on most modern phones.

I am not condoning it, but it is not really any different from messing with the radio, or smoking a cigarette, or eating, or gawking at things out of the window.

Why do we pile on additional hate because it was a phone? Would we have seen so much outrage if the story was about a woman who died because she was changing the station on her stereo? Or because she was distracted by a child in the back seat?

All are examples of stupidly taking your eyes off the road. All can and do result in fatalities. I am curious why people are outraged at one and not the others?
