Hi there

Simple question really, who would buy an overclocked 8GB 290X at £599 inc. VAT?

Obviously a pair or three of these is perfect for 4k resolution setups, but if they become available would you buy one?

No, 4GB doesn't seem to limit it even in 4k situations...

I'm sure some will though, esp a tasty pair for the price of a 295x2 ;)

It has NOT got to be reference cooling at that price though

No. Too much of a price premium over the normal 290X to risk that I'd be limited by the VRAM before the card's been replaced by something newer, faster and cheaper.

That said, 8GB per GPU does sound like the kind of thing that would get the ladies flocking to my door..... :D

If I had the money to burn on a 4K monitor and new cards now then I would consider getting a pair. But I don't.

However I am probably going to be staying at 1080p for the foreseeable future so I would get a normal 290 and wait for full fat Maxwell / Pirate Island, combined with more affordable 4K monitors and better 4K support in games (better textures and the like).

4gb is right on the edge of what's really needed for 4k (some games will slip over it most won't). I'd say no given you could buy a pair of faster 290's for the same price and deal with hitting 4gb as and when it happens.

The price premium seems a bit high considering going from a 2Gb to 4Gb card is between £40-60? Cant see it being worth a nearly £200 premium

I voted yes if I was in the market for 290Xs but the one thing that would have to change is the cards would have to come with decent Samsung memory.

Anyone considering using 290Xs @4K could be still using them in a couple of years time. There are already games when maxed @4K that go over 4gb and this will only get worse.

If things like Mantle or DX12 work well they will give higher fps which means the user can turn up the settings which in turn means more VRAM is required.

No but would pay that for a 780ti 6b classified. Gfx card prices are getting silly now. Intel cpus have creeped but fair for a 4770k, 4930k more so but complete lack of competition i suppose and is good tech which will last.

Gfx prices however just horrendous. And tech moves so fast with them. Prices vs performance on that against a 290P is really bad. And ditto others 8gb not needed, 4gb is fine for now. By the time 8gb needed these will be redundant and the newest and greatest is out. If got the money for 3/4 to max out a 4k panel may aswell just go the hog and get titan blacks.

You would need atleast 3 to max a 4k panel where ram usage would be over 4gb

I think you'll find most people don't want to pay almost £250 more for maybe at a stretch £30 of extra ram on a pcb that effectively takes zero effort to add in production of the card.

Overclocked is, well, a weird term these days. a "overclocked" sapphire 295x2 is what 12Mhz faster. I'd pay £40 more for a 8gb version, and maybe up to 20-30 more for a better cooler, and unless the overclock is obscene I will never spend extra on an overclock I can do myself.

£40 extra for the 12Mhz extra on the 295x2 is mental, that is a hair over a 1% overclock, for an almost 4% increase in cost.

Special edition cards are taking the pee these days.

no 8gb not worth it for anything and 4k is in it's infancy if we are being honest.

I would be surprised if 4k even utilised 8gb often enough to warrant the purchase.

For me certainly not. For those with 4k maybe but memory aside gpu/memory speed is still going to be the limiting factor @ such a res with aa even with such a large buffer

I totally agree, a couple of todays cards with all the memory you can stuff on them still wont provide a playable experience that will satisfy the majority of enthusiasts out there, 4k has become such a buzz word with graphics cards and in all honesty it's a little misleading. Great for the retailers but very poor value for the consumer.
