Hi there, looking to finally upgrade my old PC after getting back into gaming.
Budget is around £400/£450 max, don't need a gpu, my son just got me a HD7770, my current case should be ok it is an Antec 900.

So it would be motherboard, cpu, psu and a HDD. Was looking at some of the motherboard bundles? Don't know if they any good or not?

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=BU-179-OE

Hopefully going to order asap so if it is on the deals of the week all the better!
Thx in advance.

Do I really need that cooler? Not really into overclocking. Also is the difference noticeable between the cheaper AMD CPU's and the more expensive i5's?

Sry not really kept up the tech for the past 5 or so years!

PS if I got AMD Kaveri 7850K would that work in Crossfire with my HD7770 GPU?

What memory do you have? And how about an SSD too?

Okay. Non-overclocking chip, no need for aftermarket cooler. Difference is noticeable in some things, not so much in others. If you can afford it, get the i5, better for gaming. Kaveri only works (in CrossFire) with R7 240 and 250's. In any case, for that budget you'd be better off getting a better CPU anyway.

YOUR BASKET
1 x Intel Core i5-4670 3.40GHz (Haswell) Socket LGA1150 Processor - Retail £157.99
1 x Samsung 250GB SSD 840 EVO SATA 6Gb/s Basic - (MZ-7TE250BW) £119.98
1 x Gigabyte H87-HD3 Intel H87 (Socket 1150) DDR3 ATX Motherboard £71.99

Now, it's over budget because it's a 250GB SSD and a 2TB HDD. I included them instead of a 120GB SSD and 1TB HDD to show that if you can stretch a little more, it would be worth it. More games etc will fit on a 250GB SSD.

Hard to tell, but it's probably not worth the bother at this time. When HSA really takes off Kaveri should be attractive, but don't hold your breath.

You didn't say what kind of games you play, or how much storage you need, so I've put this together. 120 G SSD for OS and games, and 1 TB for other stuff. Also you didn't mention OS so I've thrown Windows 8.1 in.

You're clearly not a "hardcore" gamer and are looking to save some money, which is exactly the market the AMD 6 cores are aimed at. You're not overclocking so I've picked a very low cost motherboard (but still got all the features), and you can use the supplied heatsink.

Sry keep forgetting to put things in (its my age 40 today!). I don't need OS, I got Windows 7 Ultimate and as for games, it depends on my mood but things like Dayz Standalone, SimCity, CS:GO, State Of Decay.

Hmm poor choice of RAM and motherboard you want to be going with the 9 series chipset motherboards for FX processors. Will require £10 more for a decent one. Also faster RAM can be had for a fiver less. I'm on my phone atm but will post a better spec soon if somebody hasn't already beaten me to it

Thanks for the replies, sry to be a pain its been a while and want to get it right performance/value. Last build I did was 2007 and still have it now so anything would be an improvement. My current spec is Core2Duo E6750, 2Gb DDR2, Evga 650i Ultra board, BFG 8800 GTS, 250GB HDD, and a dead power supply. So as you can see anything would be a vast improvement. I can play Dayz on it with everything on low or off but it would be nice to see how it should look without hurting my eyes!

Happy birthday. By the way, Windows 8.1 will give a few more FPS than 7. If you've got a valid license still though might as well stick with that.

True, but at least I stayed in the budget! Faster RAM will make less than 1% difference which is why I went for slower to match the motherboard spec. As the OS isn't needed you can still get a good machine for under £400:

Only thing to mention is that memory will have to be underclocked to 2133 in that mobo, which might be a nuisance.

Not at all.
