Been thinking about joining the Navy for a while now, anyone ever thought about it or even joined up?
Yup...been there and have several T-Shirts from it too.
One of the best decision joing up and also one of the best decisions taking the redundancy and leaving.
Absolutely brilliant for teaching me my trade (was a WE Artificer which is now a WE ET) and for meeting great people, having great times and also seeing a few nice places.
All has changed now. I even noticed a significant change in the 15 years I was serving.
A few question s you need to ask yourself are
1 - Are you happy having other poeple run you life for you?
2 - Are you happy taking orders from people who have only got the positoin to do so because they have a pointless degree and know nothing about what they are running?
3 - Are you happy spending 6-8 months of the year away, to then come back have 2 weeks off and then start training for 3 months for your next 8 momth trip away that comes withing 9 months of gettign back from the last trip.
On a whoel the Navy has shrunk rapidly and they do not have enough hulls to cover the commitments, not enought trained personnel to man the hulls they have and have very significant equipment issues (obsolesence, shortages, protracted procurement)
The final decision is ultimately yours and please do not get donwheartend by the negative comments above, but is helpful that you have all teh facts to hand before you sign on the dotted line.
Which branch are you thinking of joining as that will also have an impact on what you are doing and how you enjoy it.
Plus sides are you get paid 24/7/365 so when you are on leave youa re still getting paid and even if you are off sick, you will not have to worry about your sick pay running out, you still get paid. Free dental and prescriptions too, plus you have access to one of the best resources for physical training and outdoor pursuits if that is your bag.
Would I go back.....noy unless they paid me significantly more than i was on when I left, ghave me guarenteed promotion within 2 years of going back and also put me in a shore based job in my home are for 3 years too..well I say that, Mrs S would have that whole return vetoed straight away
Well I have an incomplete degree in computer science, so it would be something to do with the IT system or communications. I actually have a total of 480 credits, but still not enough for a full degree.
eh? An undergrad degree (BSc, BEng, BA etc..) is usually 360 credits.

I considered it, but then realised they were a bunch of shirtlifting nancy boys so joined the Royals instead.

<Feels guilty for considering joining as a graduate>Are you happy taking orders from people who have only got the positoin to do so because they have a pointless degree and know nothing about what they are running?
