I recently purchased an 02 320CI, I'm 27, have 8 years NCB, 10 years license held, no claims and one motoring conviction from 2011 (MS90)

I'm getting quotes for £1200 plus, which seems really expensive to me. I've tried some specialists like sky insurance and adrian flux as well as comparison sites but I cannot seem to get it under £1200.

I thought with the conviction being so old and being reasonably aged, having my license for quite a while and a decent amount NCB I'd be getting much lower quotes than this.

I'm waiting on a call back tomorrow from classicline and a-plan but can anyone recommend anywhere else or any way to work out why it's so expensive?

Probably down to your postcode? If I recall Oldham area isn't brilliant for insurance? Re do the quote online with a different post code to see how it adjusts.

I had a Volvo S40 1.8 Sport insured at the same address for £600 about 5-6 years ago (so younger, less ncb, less driving experience) and its not a 'huge' jump in performance

MS90 is one of the worst for insurance I believe? Taking that and your postcode into account, seems like a pretty fair quote to me.

Just run a few quotes: change post code, car and conviction to see what's bumping it up to be higher than expected.

Really annoys me that it's now off my license but I still have to mention it because its within 5 years :(

I did try an old post code in a nicer area and it did do around £1000, tried removing the conviction and it quoted me more prices but not any less and other cars are cheaper i just didnt think it'd be quite so much more

If the conviction is "only" adding £200 or so, try getting one or more older or female drivers without convictions or accidents on to the policy as a named driver

forgot to say already got my mother on, 20yrs driving and same ncb, no claims or anything

my 05 plate 320i is the same, the brokers couldnt see why i got a quote for a 330i at the same price

Alex

Guess it's a running theme with them for some reason. Guess I'll just have to deal with it, I move soon so hopefully where I move might be a cheaper postcode.

Its an area premium. I used to live in an oldham postcode and when i moved back to macclesfield ( sk11) my insurance more than halved overnight.

Maybe it's because there's statistics for accidents with similar cars. Maybe the 320ci and similar is unfortunately a popular car with the unruly crowd? Just hazarding a guess but this seems likely...

lol....don't expect much better in Oldham! when i lived there (just for a few months) I didn't bother trying to insure my car there, prices were insane and rightly so!

Live in Mcr city centre now, 26 z4 3.0i 3 years ncb with an sp30, just under £600...would have been £450 without the SP30 :(

Quotes in OL4 were about £3.5k before my SP30.

Looks like I'll be trying to move at least out of an oldham post code then (contract is up soon)

My insurance in Mcr city centre was always more than it is now in OL12 - unless that's one of the "better" oldham postcodes :p (it's actually Rochdale).

For the record I pay less than £400 but it's nothing exciting, Honda Accord 09 Tourer and I'm 31 with 9+ years NCB so comparable to the OP.

I'm with Swiftcover by the way. I think it's more to do with your conviction, it's a bad one.

Yes seems plausible, could be influenced by things like perhaps being cheaper than more powerful models and thus more likely to be driven by driven by younger/inexperienced/reckless drivers (leading to the claim stats). Insurance is never as straightforward as looking at the power/price of a vehicle, you always get some quirks and it isn't just newly qualified drivers that should consider it carefully when considering their next purchase.

Im with ZX on this one... You didn't check insurance before buying the car?

Insurance premiums are simple to work out...

Postcode + age + convictions - NCB x "number out of their ass" = whatever they feel like :(

MS90 - Failing to give information as to identity of driver etc

Seems trivial compared to others, whys it classed as so bad?
