Cats indoors are fine, they defecate on your property. Cats outside should, IMHO, be considered suitable for pest control while on other people's property. Cat owners should take some responsibility for their animals by not letting them run loose. If keeping them indoors is a problem then get a dog and clean up after it.

By law, they don't have to. I have an indoor cat so no agenda here...

I don't have a cat so I'm certainly not biased either :D Indoor cats are lovely though, except when they try (and sometime succeed) to run out the front door and disappear for a few days :(

It's the mess in my garden I don't like. If only there was a way to discourage them without being branded cruel - I could do what I want with rats, cats are not so easily discouraged.

If you died at home and nobody found you, your cat would eat you when it got hungry.

A dog however, would starve.

/thread

Is there actually any evidence that a dog wouldn't eat you? I seem to recall a buried memory about a dog eating an old woman or something. Probably made it up :p

I wouldn't hold it against the cat tho :p

For my 9000'th post... Awesome. I get to praise pups :D.

From what I recall, it's the dog that would eat you if its starving, though I'm sure any animal would when its near breaking point in hunger.

The ignorance, individual style and beauty of a cat wins against the dirty panting animal.

Fact. Cats are cuter by a factor of 1x10^dawwwwww. In addition...

They purr, which gives off these amazing vibrations and is very enjoyable.
They can fit neatly into your trousers if you need them to.
They have rough tongues.
If you aren't in the mood, they will sod off and do their own thing.
They are perfect size for sitting on laps.
They eat less and poo less.
They can be trained to poo like humans.
Don't eat or roll in every excreted substance they find.
Like to rub themselves against you.
Keep your bed warm without turning the heating on.

I could go on.

To me it makes complete sense to keep kitties indoors for the reasons you mentioned. Safety of the cat, and safety of wildlife being two big ones.

It's a shame that so many people have this instinctive view that it's "cruel".

I categorically can't not deny that that isn't not false, but I might be not falsifying the wrong answer.

The more I quoted the less funny it became and now I feel quite awful.

Furries are the last people on earth who should have an opinion on how animals should or should not be treated, cared for, or even regarded.

As a generalisation...

Dog = Loyal and dependable pack/tribe member! A Dog is ultimately your loyal Soldier who would give his life for you! You can do pretty much what you like to a Dog and he will still come back for more (Consider the fable of the Loyal Samurai)

Cat = A friend! But one that will from time to time prefer to do her own thing! (If you neglect or mistreat her however, Unlike the Dog, She will simply go and live elsewhere)

(Yep, Dogs are always Male and Cats are always Female! ;) )

My Cat is nearly 20 years old, there are less than a handful of people who I consider friends that I have known for that long!

And I will miss her when she is gone!

People who get dogs are mostly selfish, every big dog that has been owned down the street where I grew up would wake people up and night, in the morning when let out, are loud and annoying during the day when taken outside.

Few doors down someone had a schnauzer, smallish dog, still a yappy loud thing. I honestly don't know if stupid tiny dogs like Chihuahua's are noisy or not.

I honestly don't think dogs should be allowed unless you live on private land with a minimum distance between your property and the neighbours. Number of times my cats woke up anyone except my own family.... none. Number of times I've been woken up by dogs barking over the years, must be hundreds..... **** dogs. Well **** dog owners who are selfish.

I've had other peoples cats crap in our garden and our cats probably crap in other gardens, but by and large cats crap under bushes not in the middle of a pavement. I don't take my cats to parks, to let them crap where kids play, hell where I would play football. As a pet I find dogs ridiculous, selfish, unhygienic and just terrible.

I don't hate dogs, most are friendly and nice enough, but leaving dog crap all over parks and being noisy just makes them horrible pets. If you want to choose to have a noisy pet who wakes you up, fine, but how is it okay for you to make that choice for me.

Although I am a cat person myself, most animals are cute especially the wolf type dog breeds as per pic above.

Although with dogs a lot of them are fugly and scary!

I have never liked cats...

We had a house cat and it would constantly bully our dopey bichon by scratching and clawing. And when it got neutered it tried to savage it as soon as it was awake from the operation.

I tried to seperate them and got 4 puncture wounds to my hand and it was swollen like a claw for a full week. The bichon is the most fluffy lovable dopey thing and the cat is just a pest.

Screw cats.

That dog isn't trying to save the fish, it's 'burying it' for later. My terrier bitch does this all the time with large food items once she's full (pigs heads, whole fish, rabbits etc). She has also killed several cats in her 9 years, including a neighbour's who tried to steal her food, so.... Dogs win the internet. :D

Well Yes!

I imagine that If you had been slipped a mickey and woke up to find your balls had been cut off I dare say you would have been pretty hacked off too! :p

The reason people don't like cats is because they are ********s, but that's only because they can fend for themselves.

Cats do not need a home and someone to feed them. Most cats are still capable of surviving on their own.

Having two dogs and two cats, I'd definitely get both, watching two little fluffy balls play with two German Shepards is awesome.
