Agency/Permanent when applying for jobs

I'm currently doing agency work, I only work with 1 company and pretty much do full time hours. There's always work there

I'm thinking of applying for some full time jobs with other companies

Wondering how it will be viewed that I'm just an agency worker when I apply for these jobs?

I could get a full time/permanent job at the company I do the agency work for but don't want to do that and then leave, I may want to go back to them some day if these other jobs don't work out

so - how would an employer view that?

getting plenty agency work
or
having a permanent job
when applying for the other jobs

I wouldn't have thought it would make much difference. You can always say you're looking for the security a permanent role brings if asked why you want to move on to permanent roles in another job interview.

It would seem like a bit of a daft step to me for someone to apply for a permanent role at a job if they were only going to stay there for a very short period of time to move to another permanent role. Unless there's some benefits to being a permanent employee with this company or you'd be happy to stay there for a while then it hardly seems worth trying to get employed with them just to change your status from agency to permanent.

thanks for the input

have been fortunate enough in the past that I've walked in to the jobs I've had
never had to apply for a job before where there will probably be a number of applicants going for the one job, so some competition

it was by choice in my case but often you hear 'there's a reason that guy's an agency worker' ie there's something that prevents them from getting/holding down a permanent job

As your doing full time hours as agency staff for the one company have you ever considered if they would hire you direct as a permanent member of staff? That's pretty much how i started and I've made 3 job moves internally since being made permanent to a much better job since.

Then the people saying that have lousy attitudes.

My Employer takes on probably 90% of its new hires as Agency it allows them to easily and quickly get rid of people that aren't cutting it. Once you have secured your role they will work with you to reach a certain competency then as long as they aren't overstaffed in that area and you hit the requirements then they take you on as permanent staff hired directly.

that's what I'm saying - I could get a full time job, but it's not the kind of job that you can get promotions etc without doing a completely different (unrelated to what i do now) role
there's better paid jobs with different companies out there I want to try for so no intention of staying with them forever
and as I say I don't want to take a job then leave after a month or whatever incase I want to go back to them some time

is that what you mean?

Not really but sounds like you aren't really happy in your current role even if you were permanent or agency.

Best to just look for another permanent job whilst you are agency staff. i cant see any companies looking down on your as being Agency staff, it's better to be in work than none at all while job hunting

This might make no difference either..

When contacting an employer asking about jobs would it make a difference if it was by email or a phone call?

Depends who answers the phone :p but I always think talking direct then getting details forwarded to you is much better.

Reality of it is that it probably doesn't matter.

As long as you are prepared when you phone them, you don't what to be remembered as 'that guy who umm'd and ahh'd a lot and didn't know what he was talking about'

No harm in applying for other work either. I've gone from agency to permanent twice before in the same role and its always worked out better for me with more interesting prospects.
