HELP! Railway Tank 5" Gauge

My father in law makes models like this by hand, albeit a different gauge. I'm constantly amazed by his skill.

Hope your grandad gets better.

Need lots more details to give anything resembling an accurate valuation :)

£1500 is going to be very low for a 5" gauge steamer, but further than that I don't know enough about these to give a truly accurate figure. Much depends on who built it and how.

I'd reccomend Lacy Scott & Knight as a set of auctioneers with a very decent toys & model section who will be able to give you a decent valuation, rather than any fudge figures.
Let them know that you've been pointed in their direction by a friend of Terry Durrant's (He used to do a lot of the model auction stuff for them) :)

Upcoming auction catalog for reference on their size:

Alternatively, try and get in touch with your local society of model engineers; They'll have contacts with auctioneers and dealers who may be interested.

He is only getting rid because he only has become very ill. The guy offered him £1000, then came back and offered £1500. So something seems amiss would you not agree?

Is it insured?

If it were me I'd be moving it to another house just to be on the safe side!

now me and my mom have a feeling this person is trying to rip him off, as he keeps increasing his price by considerable amounts.

he probably was trying to rip him off - if you don't find a good way of ascertaining its value then you probably shouldn't deal with this buyer

Hi there, my grandad has recently been offered an amount for this:

He has told me its a "Great Western Railway Tank 240, 5" Gauge"

now me and my mom have a feeling this person is trying to rip him off, as he keeps increasing his price by considerable amounts.

Im looking for any information or somebody that knows where I can call/contact to get a rough price. He says the only thing wrong with it is the boiler needs fixing.

Thank you in advance for any help

Im from a model railway background and I can tell you your looking at at least a few thousand pounds there, depending on its overall condition. If its a live steam locomotive and the boiler needs attention that may affect the price

Best advice I can give is take plenty of photographs and call a dedicated shop such as hattons model railways in Liverpool. They can appraise it and give you a rough price :) Also, if youre on facebook, have a look at the model railway trading group ( adults only ) theres lots of knowledgable people in there including some who run 5" guage railways :)

Its cool, Very cool, But that video of a man being pulled along behind it around his garden makes me chuckle.

Last one on ebay sold for £3.1K but that had its boiler certificate :)

I almost forgot, tower models in blackpool specialise in large scale, so id give them a call first :)

Lovely looking engine

My dad spent most of my childhood building a Princess Royal Class Locomotive from scratch

Ill give that place Origin suggested a call tomorrow, its definitely something that is going to need a specialist's evaluation. If anyone knows of anywhere else that may be worth calling that would be much appreciated!

I'd certainly be talking to more than one place about valuation. Let us know how you get on with this.

I have just applied to join that facebook group and am going to give Lacy Scott and Knight a call, Thanks for your advice. Just to clarify my grandad does know the person that is interested in buying it, he belongs to a small club that ride/build these trains not far from where we live. But as I say he only knows him, I wouldn't say they are friends.

Ill keep you updated and let you know what happens!!

If I had the time, space, money...

Love steamers, it's a shame that I'm still perplexed by how running gear works though :p Maybe that's why I stick to working on old diesel locos.

You don't want to call any small dealers, or Hattons :)
Hattons is primarily new stuff, with a smaller sideline in used bits and bobs, and they're definitely not experts in 5" live steam which you don't know all the details of.

5" gauge live steam is much more specialist stuff, and you absolutely need to speak to someone with good experience in evaluating and selling these types of models.
Some smaller dealers are OK, but there's no way I'd be talking to one of them as a first port of call unless I knew exactly what I had on my hands :)

There's a cracking little 5" guage railway around here at the Bramptoms Park in Newcastle-under-Lyme, it must've been there for nigh on 50 years. It used to be great going for rides on that as a kid.
