DLink NAS slow transfer speeds - help!

I've just bought and setup a D-Link Sharecenter 2-Bay Network Storage Enclosure. I have 2 x 3TB Seagate drives setup as RAID 1.

I have it connected with a CAT 6 cable to my BT Home Hub 5 which is, supposed to be, a Gigabit connection. My laptop has 802.11n wifi connecting to the same BT Home Hub.

I'm currently transfering over 200GB of data to the newly setup NAS but I'm only getting transfer speeds of 4.65MB/sec!!!

This seems really slow to me - has anyone any idea what could be wrong?

Thanks.

So you're transferring the data from the laptop over a Wi-Fi connection? If that is the case try connecting the laptop to the router with a network cable.

Yeah, after some research in thinking it's my WiFi connection letting me down. I don't really want to run cable to the laptop though!

I might try and find a dual channel WiFi dongle to see if I get a better speed than the built in WiFi.

I am going to do this when I get home tonight. I will still look into options for speeding up the wireless connection though.

Wireless isn't really meant for data transfers. More for light browsing.

Do the first backup/transfer with the cable connected.

I know, but I want to be able to transfer files from and to my NAS at semi-reasonable speeds and everything is setup as wireless (laptops, tablet etc.).

I have just ordered an 802.11ac WiFi card for my lappy - hopefully it will make some difference!
