Think I might pull the trigger on one of these. I will be keeping it for a long time so would like to know "Is the 8gb overkill for 1080p gaming?

I keep seeing games like, mordor, watchdogs etc needing a lot of vram, am i better off with the 8gb for future proofing or will the 4gb be just fine?

Sorry folks, prob been asked a lot but I want to make the right choice :)

I still think it's a lot of money just for a card with 8Gb VRAM, and an older card at that!

I would personally buy a 4Gb GTX970 and change when it's needed.

At the moment it seems like 8Gb will be overkill for 1080p, however with lazy devs coding for consoles that may change. Personally, with this card, I think I'd be inclined to go with the 4Gb version. An 8Gb version on its own won't be good for 4K, because while you'll have the required RAM you'll lack the raw grunt.

The whole promise and the reason these 8GB cards are preferable over the initial limited run of Vapor-X cards (which seemingly took ages to shift 250 units anyway) is that with the reference blower you're able to easily use 3 to 4, or even 2 without issue. The Vapor-X card is a 3 slot cooler.

The reason this is the whole promise is because having one card for 4K is futile, and sadly EK had no plans to release a waterblock until very recently for the Vapor-X.

Now however, you can get Vapor-X waterblocks, so it really depends on your application. If you want to stack 3 or 4 hot reference blower cards together, go for it. Or you can put these on water at a reduced cost on blocks also.

Personally I think it's too little too late, but the only reason I would consider which ever 8GB variant is if you plan on running multiple cards for 4K. If you're not, then don't bother.

no it wont, because you cant play bad console ports on pc regardless of RAM...too many bugs......just look at Evil Within, it's not even worth the risk

the problem with the 290x is it runs hotter and noisier and this is a huge negative, it will be for the 390x as well

The Vapour-X is neither hot nor noisy. It does dissipate a lot of heat into your case so you do need to have decent case airflow, but the card itself keeps cool well. Personally I'd not look at the 8GB version as it's too expensive for the performance as a single card for me, I can see the point for people who'll watercool 4 of them for 4k. Then again, I'd be more likely to get the 290 than the 290X so I guess I'm hardly their main market.
