In negotiations to buy a new Fiesta ST at the moment and I'm trying to get my local dealer to match or get near an online broker price (drive the deal).

I am so nearly where I want to be and all I want extra is an extension of the manufacturers warranty to 5 years (£260 in the brochure) and the style pack (was being given away free last quarter on all ST's, now £175) included for the price they have given me. This is potentially on an in stock car built last quarter but unregistered.

They have just said they can do nothing further and given me the:

"Unfortunately I have no further discount to give."

"We hope you decide to use us and fully understand you trying your best to get the best possible deal so will not feel at all put out, we see every customer as equal and I fully respect your decision either way.

Thank you for your test drive and feedback aswell."

I am very surprised, that they won't want to sell a car for the sake of the two things mentioned above but i'm not sure if they are now playing hardball or just genuinely have nothing more to give. Trouble is, I don't want to give in earlier than I need to (if I even choose to give in).

How do you tell, and where would you go from here? Experiences welcome! :)

Why not buy it from a broker and just add those extras if it still works out cheaper?

If you really want to buy from them I'd just give a call and state that you are still very keen but need those additions - then wait a couple of days and see if you get an offer of one out of two or the likes

You want a further £435 discount on top of any other discounts you may have been given?

What deal do you have now?

Why not just buy it from the broker? What is the downside?

A few:

-I think if financed, you have to go and collect it and sign paperwork etc. I have heard many people who have gone through drivethedeal having to drive a long while to pick it up.

-Broker says 12-14 weeks lead time because of the demand which puts it potentially in the middle of April. It works out better for me for a number of reasons if it is the beginning of March and as they have stock, ready to be registered on a 15 plate/picked up 1st March this is an advantage

-I know I would be able to take it to any Ford dealer, but I feel (or at least would hope) you might be better looked after if the car was originally bought from them. - I know this one isn't a real reason, just a gut feeling.

Try another dealer (ideally from a different dealer group to prevent them just backing up your local branch), see how close you can get them to what you want. It should give you an idea of whether there is any more discount to be had.

£435 to me. Nothing really to Ford, especially the style pack. The cars were clearly built/ordered end of last year whilst Ford were putting them on the car for free! It just surprises me that they won't bite considering I was ready to reserve one.

Yes, I probably will do this. There is one other different group near me. All the rest are the same dealer group! Still might be worth trying one of the same group though I suppose, especially as they all have access to the same stocked cars.

You say this, but from their point of view you've already had a discount of assumedly several thousand that they probably don't usually have to give, they will be aware that you will need to wait a few months for a new order and that there is probably a reason that you haven't gone for this.

You're expecting them to do all the moving but by the sounds of it not laxing your own expectations

Surely if dealers could match the prices of brokers, brokers wouldn't exist? I mean that's the whole point.

I am not asking them to completely match it, just get close which they have. Its just these few extras that are the final stumbling block.

 Ofcourse I am.

So you expect someone else to have to significantly compromise but will not entertain any compromise yourself - yet wonder why they are now drawing lines?

I should say I am no fan of car dealers but it doesn't sound like you're being entirely realistic.

Sort finance out yourself via a loan, purchase from a broker and accept the wait.....or be prepared to compromise slightly on what you're expecting from the dealer

I am compromising (they still cant match the broker, and I know they will not be able to), but this whole thread is about when to know when to stop and when the dealer can give no more. That is what I am asking

You get a decent finance deposit contribution if you take out Ford finance and the apr is only 4.3% over 2 years which can't really be bettered that much by a bank loan so Ford finance it is. Anyway, back on topic..

....OCUK. The only place you can get berated for trying to get the best deal on a new car :p

I was just trying to out things into perspective.

As suggested give them a call or go in, let them know where you stand and in the next couple of days contact another dealer. You will know you've pushed things to the limit when they tell you they can do no more and don't contact you for a few days thereafter even if they know you're still keen

If all this fails order from a broker and take a trip to pick up the car - though I've signed and returned finance papers electronically and by post in the past so I can't see the need to go

Keep going, there obviously enough margin left for them to match the brokers otherwise other dealerships wouldnt be offering it through brokers at that price.

I'd probably send one final email stating that if they can give you want you will come down and sign tomorrow. Worst case is that you go through the broker.

With regards to having to go and sign finance, you really don't need to that. I've just signed finance with Renault in Stockport without stepping foot in the dealership. They emailed all finance docs, then told me which pages to sign, scan and email back to them. We only need to go to collect the vehicle next week.

Fair enough. I just heard a lot on forums that even though DTD say they will do free delivery, sometimes they say they can only do the advertised price, if the car is collected (normally from the other side of the country to you :p )

You didn't like it when someone above mentioned this but negotiation works two ways. If you provide a list of demands then don't expect to get them all met. Perhaps a fair compromise is to ask for the warranty and pay for the style pack? What's £175 in the grand scheme of things when buying a £15k car?
