Im currently running a iiyama 4k monitor (which Ive just sold), and looking for a replacement.

My initial thoughts were to go with the new Phillips 40" 4k monitor, but now im thinking of going for an ultrawide, after reading several reviews.

I was getting a little frustrated in trying to drive 4k, even though my PC isnt poor (I dont think anyway)

4970k
16gb
295x2

Has anyone else done this swap. Would love to hear your thoughts.

Thanks in advance

I can't comment on 4K as I've not tried it, but I have an LG 34" Ultrawide and a Dell U2713H 1440p monitor. I can't comment on quality, but I can on aspect ratio and ultra wide is much better than conventional. Much much better.

If you must go ultrawide now, the Samsung S34E790Cis probably your best bet. All the others use LG IPS panels which seem plagued with bleed and IPS glow. You MAY get a good one, but there seem to be more happier users of the Samsung. It's not perfect though, and you may want to wait a bit and see what others come out later this year. The Acer Predator XR341CK is one to keep an eye out for. Alternatively, the soon to be released Acer XB270HU is looking great, going by the TFT Central review.

Was thinking about the Dell U3415W? Or perhaps the "uncurved" AOC U3477PQU

I went from the iiyama 4k to the Samsung ultra wide. It is a lovely monitor and far easier to run. I actually sold off my second 290 as the one was ok (granted not with super high settings.) I don't regret the swap. Just wish my 4k monitor would sell! :p

Both use the same IPS panel essentially, from LG, and if you read up on it, you'll find MANY people have encountered serious BLB and glow issues. Bit of a lottery really. I'm not saying you will definitely have a problem, but don't say you weren't warned lol ;). If those are your choices, it will come down to whether you want the extra immersion of the curve or not. Some people prefer flat for work purposes, but for gaming/movies the curve is the better choice. For your reference, the Samsung uses a VA panel, so deeper blacks and no bleed. Neither of these are fast panels though, both at 60Hz, if that matters to you. The upcoming Predator XR341CK I mentioned is supposedly going to feature 144Hz + G-sync, which could be mightily impressive indeed, if it lives up to expectations.

Cheers for the comments all. I would wait for the Asus Predator, but I need one by Wednesday, so need to make my mind up by tomorrow.

Im leaning towards the Dell, due to it being on offer this week....or should I shell out the extra £70-£80 and go for the Samsung????

I have the Samsung after having 4 of the LG Models which is the same spec as the dell. They all went back because of bad bleed. With the Samsung you wont have that so for me its worth it purely for that. The motion is also smoother on the Samsung as its 2.9ms compared to 8.9 on the LG which I would imagine the dell is similar too.
Downsides on the Samsung? The colours aren't as good at of the box but I have a calibrator so that wasn't a problem.

I ended up going for the Samsung and I'm pretty happy with it. Was between that and the Dell U3415W but the feedback on the Samsung generally seems better. Colours are great and blacks are awesome with it being a VA panel, motion is smooth without ghosting and 21:9 is the future of monitor aspect ratios IMO. I'd never go back to 16:9!

The only downsides are that there is some gamma shift in colour when you have a single shade across the entire monitor and obviously it's still 60Hz plus no Gsync/Freesync as of yet. Oh, that and it's pretty damn expensive just now.

I did contemplate 4k but I wanted something to replace my dual montor setup for productivity and didn't feel a single 16:9 monitor would allow me to do that. Games look fricking awesome in 21:9 aswell!

Did you get a refund in the end or did you just take the hit?

I was going to go for one of the 34 inch ultrawides and having seen one they are stunning. Having thought about it I'm going to opt for something like the 40 inch Phillips as it can do the 21:9 aspect with borders top and bottom anyway.

Yeah it was bought from OCUK. After I sent it to LG for the second time because it wasn't fixed they just agreed to send me a BER letter which I gave to OCUK and it entitled me to a full refund. LG tried to repair it the first time but it was still the same and the second time they said it would take too long to get parts so they just gave me that and OCUK did the refund and then I bought the Samsung.
