Hey all,

Just about to put together a 4790k build but am wondering whether to use the H100 cooler or go back to air with a TRUE 120 extreme.

The air cooler is this one :

I'm sure most are aware what a H100 is. I am just having trouble deciding which cooler to go with! I assume the h100 will be more capable for removing heat?

Either will be grand, the TRUE may be a bit old now but is still one of the best coolers ever. The h100 though will take up less space. If you have both id try each with the same fans and see how they compare.

Its a pain to try them both mate as the motherboard needs removing from the case. (HAF 932 has cut out in the wrong place for the cpu retention bracket though it may be different with the ud5h in there!).

I'm not sure what made the 120 so great but the 1155 retention bracket became pretty desirable at one point!

Ahh, understand. I used to have a TRUE that i used on an earlier build, switched it out for a prolimatech super mega, (silver and copper megahelims) cooling was almost identical. The megahelims is still included in some recent ocuk overclocked bundles. I can remember 8 Pack stating, megahelims if you have tall ram, alpenfohn k2 if you use low profile stuff. So as the TRUE and mega are very similair the former is still able to hold its own. Hence why the brackets are much sought after by those who change sockets and keep the cooler.

Thanks for your help : Out of interest what are you cooling yours with?

Ive got the Alpenfohn k2, i replaced the super mega with this when i was still on X58. Bit of a beast but it has served me well on a few builds since that old setup.

This is one hot running cpu! Or at least it certainly seems to be! Still doing windows updates at the minute but will set to trying to overclock a little shortly!

Bios has waaay too many options!

They are pretty hot under certain stress programs, p95 etc. Avoid theese and they're perfectly fine.

Asus real bench is a good one. My temps in it at 4.7 in 1.300v are 82c max, latest p95 it will hit 95c at stock.

I used OCCT and my temperatures are pretty high! Tempted to whip the board out and try the h100 but knowing my luck it'll be worse than the true!

What temps were you hitting, and was that at stock? Also make sure your on the latest bios for your board. Early versions set very high default cpu voltage even at stock speed.

That's fine at 4.7 Mike, very similar to mine. If you di try the H100 id be interested in your results. Your temps in games will be a bit lower. Mine will max at 75c in bf4, but I have two gpu's that add a substantial amount of heat to my case due to their non reference coolers. This adds upto 10c on cpu temps.

I'm going to try it mate, just got to fetch the mrs from town and i'll rip it apart and have a go!

I have two corsair SP120 fans which I think I'll use in place of the original H100 fans so lets see how it fares with two fans as previously I ran it push pull with 4 of the stock h100 fans!

Cheers, I use the sp's myself on the k2. Theese are the 2350 rpm PWM versions. Quite loud at full speed.

The TRUE 120 resulted in temps (maximum) of 89,90,91,80.

The same test on the H100 fails with OCCT reporting max temperature reached.

Now to take the bloody thing apart again and put the true back!

What's your vcore at? Seems high on temps. Id try real bench as I've found it to be kinder with temps.
