I think this is going to be a difficult problem for me to resolve remotely. My Mother keeps getting message from BT saying "you're close to your 10GB monthly broadband usage". She just received one on 12th. All she does is use email, a small amount of browsing, and she has Spotify installed, which she hardly ever uses. She doesn't download movies, and the TV isn't using the connection for anything either.
She is not particularly computer literate, I told her to run Windows Defender, but she said it wouldn't connect and asked whether there were any other anti-virus software running at the same time. She's running Windows 8 or 8.1 I believe. I presume just typing 'check security status' into the start search should bring up what anti-virus software is running?
I'm not too sure how to advise her. Firstly, I want to make sure it is her computer which is using all this data - is there any good (preferably free) software she can install to monitor the internet activity? I have visions of some kind of malicious program running which might be spamming etc. not too sure if I'm being a little paranoid?
