Hello gang, discovered that my front tyres had worn down to the markers on the inside edge, so I had my tracking & alignment done this afternoon, and now I need a new pair of tyres for the back. I only got them last September. So that is probably 5000 miles... :(

Which of these would be your pick for a Polo? Keep to the ones which are in the "premium" or "quality" category, and are around £40 and below please, and I don't want Continentals again because I wasn't particularly impressed by how these ones have worn (not only on the inside edge)

Summer or all-season tyres.

Cheers guys. :)

I was using Uniroyal Rainexperts on a fiesta. Remember them being quite cheap to and offered a lot of grip. The size was 175/65/R14. Id definitely recommend them.

You're in sussex, get summer tires.

Sounds like your alignment and tracking are off, that's the reason the tire has worn unevenly, not just on the inner edge either

Can't give any recommendations, but "premium" and "£40 or less"... I hate you :( :p
Tyres are cheap in that size! You can get loads of different Bridgestones, Continentals, Dunlops and so on for under £40 if you look. I just don't know which are better than which. Even the Pirelli Cinturato P1 Verde's are under £40.

Its almost like you didn't read the OP at all. :p

Uniroyal Rainexpert 3's for £38 each?
Goodyear EfficientGrip Performance for £36 each?
Pirelli CInturato P1 Verde's for £39 each?
Dunlop StreetResponse 2's for £35 each?

e; Found RainExpert 3's for £29 each, should I just go with those?

I seem to remember you got those continentals quite recently? Your alignment must have been massively off for them to wear out that quickly - can't blame the tyres.

Any of the premium ones should be fine - my personal choice of brand is Pirelli, as mine have lasted ages and coped well even in very wet/snowy conditions, although I notice most people on here tend to favour Goodyear/Continental, which are probably equally as good.

Yeah they are only 6 months old with 5500 - 6500 miles on them...

The mechanic at the garage where I got them tracked earlier said that the tracking on the front wheels was fine, but the alignment was totally out because the back wheels were on the wrong setting. I asked if that could have caused the inner wear on the front tyres and he said yes, though I must admit I do have my doubts about that? I asked what else could have caused it, and he said that it could be the tyres being under inflated, but that would cause wear on both edges...

Would they be alright to leave on the back for a while, since the back tyres wear down very gradually? The tread is fine all-over apart from on the inside edge. The edges aren't completely bald, but they are very close. Are they illegal with less than 1.6mm of tread on the edge?

I don't think it extends to the main tyre tread, I'll get a pic at some point.

Either way, £59 including 48hr delivery for TWO Uniroyal Rainexpert 3's... :D

I tell you what, this is one of those rare occasions where I am happy I own a city econobox. :p

As you seem intent on keeping this car I would suggest changing them regardless of legality. The fact they (should) wear slowly means you shouldn't need to change them again.

Consider weather like you may have experienced today and ask yourself if you want to be driving through standing water on the motorway with "not completely bald" rear tyres.

Well when you put it like that...... :p

Also, I am only keeping the car because it makes financial sense since it has already been fixed up now.

I'd also keep the better tyres on the back personally. I'd rather understeer than oversteer in a FWD car. I used to swap back to front when I got new tyres on my old FWD cars.

That is what I have done before as well, and what I will be doing this time too, I was just asking if they would be OK on the back for a while, simply because it would take longer for the inside edges to go totally bald.

Local guy will do them for £6.50 a wheel. :)

Most tyre fitting places will fit your own tyres, but some of them don't like it. They will all tell you that they have no liability if the tyre fails though.

I generally don't go for the bargain basement type tyres. Not worth the risk imo.

I have tried Kuhmos and Hankooks on my Clio and found they wore within 8,000 miles. They were around 70-80 each. Decided to invest in some Michelins to see how they'd fare at 110 a pop. Best decision I could have made, tbh. I've done 6,000 miles on them and still have a shade under 5mm left on them. They'll actually work out cheaper than those middle of the road types I was trying before.
