Hot in who's opinion?
I think 70 degrees is pretty hot too. The card is designed to run like that so what's the problem?

Hot in who's opinion?

To be fair 84c is hot in the sense that the card will do a fair bit of throttling. Overclocking is not much of an option at that temperature.

It only locks to 84c you can change that in afterburner, I don't bother, I leave mine personally as it isn't loud, after having a 290x 80c doesn't bother me really either.
And for benching, whack the fan up to 100% still quieter than my 290x and temps NEVER go above 68c when pumping as many volts as AB will let me.

I heard from Linus Tech Tips that the 980TI safety temp is 90c before it starts to get damaged etc. and the turn will throttle at 80-85c
Maybe i'm wrong and i'm not by any means an expert but I think the last thing you want to do is overlock buddy, you may damage your GPU.
Yes, but as we know- the card will try to keep the best compromise on temps/noise.
It boosts initially with lower fan speeds- causing the target temp to be reached relatively quickly. If you're using GPU load for prolonged periods it then increases the fan until it gets to about 30-40% at which point it's still doing close to 1300mhz IIRC and at that speed, the fan is inaudible.
Using Afterburner I tried 100% on the fan speed for a moment and it was LOUD . But at the same time, the temps dropped instantly and putting my hand at the back of the case I could feel the pressure of the air coming out and it was very impressive.
I would much rather have all that hot air being pumped out of my case than being recirculated too (hence choosing Reference design for £500 over the AMP edition which was on offer at £510).

Its a good thing though I love these discussions, I have a really good headset and I can hardly hear anything outside of them so noise isnt much a concern. but of course everyone wants cooler and faster. But Dem Reference Cards do look soo darn good. AMP! look great too dont get me wrongOhh you guys !! your making rethink again when I was so sure I was going for the AMP!
My money, I'd go for the Amp! !
Just gone from a ref 670 to a Zotac 780Ti OC triple fan cooler, and at idle and under load, it's quieter, as you'd expect.
Don't think I'll ever go back to reference cards again.

Both the 980 and 980ti will be fine for 1080p. If you want to max every game you'll need the Ti but even that isn't guaranteed.
Speaking of guarantees go for Zotac cards which come with a 5 year warranty which is more than double that of most over manufacturers.

The 980 MSI is only £410 ! thats the one I was going to get if I was going for the 980

I'd get the 980Ti to get the most frames I could. It's unlikely you will get 144fps on ultra settings as others have said, but if you can get more frames by turning down a few settings to bring you closer somewhat, then that would be my recommendation as well.
From my own experience of owning 1080p 120hz screen, sure getting 120fps constant is nice to get the smoothest look, but in all honesty, achieving 70fps average and more was a smooth enough experience at 120hz.

It's your money dude. I can confirm that running Witcher3 on ultra didn't cause my CPU fan to make enough noise to be heard. Make of that what you will.
I've had nothing but 3rd party coolers before, my favourite one I've had was the HiS IceQ cooler, which is a similar design to the NVidia reference Titan cooler.
All setups I've had where there are fans pushing hot air back into the case, have ended up being louder and more irritating in the end. When the fans do start making noise, I would always rather have the Titan reference cooler over a normal fan. Can't stress that point enough.
Obviously if you're buying high end and going for custom PCB you don't get the option most of the time, but if it's a reference PCB and you're just deciding reference cooler vs 3rd party, I don't see the benefit myself.
