Bedfordshire Police: Speed cameras and sponsorship 'may fund police'

Well he has just destroyed the whole argument that they are for safety and not revenue :P

When people hear that they are active and slow down, what then? Find some other way to fleece the public?

Last year the people of Bedfordshire got to vote on a tax rise which would go towards the Bedfordshire police. But since it was only going to benefit Luton (aka the anus of Bedfordshire), people overwealmingly voted no. In the end they still got a 2% increase. But they seem slightly bitter towards the public about the whole thing.

Most people will slow down for them anyway even if there not on so it wouldn't make too much difference.

How do you mean what ever happened to road safety?
 
Well it's one of those "variable speed limit" scams. Which are purely for venue as they always seem to set it just below the speed traffic can naturally flow at.

Its purely a response to the likely budget cuts. Bedfordshire police seem to be amongst the least able to deal with further reductions to their budget, and the senior officers are finally talking about it.
 
Nobody cares about safety in Bedfordshire, it's the dumping ground of the home counties and the police probably need the money to support itself in Bedford and Luton.
 
That may well be the case but I wouldn't try and milk the the motorist!

Everyone is under the cosh right now and been squeezed to the hilt. But we all have to make do the best way we can.

I know he is probably just putting it out there maybe to highlight his plight, but it does not mean that he is right to do so.

tbh this is true, when ever I go through Luton the doors get locked and my foot gets planted to the floor. Its no wonder it's a good money making scheme for them.

I've no issue with the police trying to raise money as long as it doesn't result in a 'bent' system.

At the end of the day, we'd all complain if they couldn't help us when we needed it due to budget cuts. If they can raise money from speeders then do it, they should also stop scrapping cars when they stop them for no insurance etc and sell them on to help fund it.
 
He's also saying this because of the 8 new sets of average speed cameras and 8 static that have been placed on our most profitable dangerous roads and wants a cut of their cash.

They arm pensioners with a speed gun to patrol key routes around the county, then the top routes with the highest people speeding get a new camera installed. Most common areas include just before/after a 30-60 limit change, or roads that used to be 60 now a 40. They're also installing some new ones in Dunstable to cover a rat run that was reduced to 20mph for a good mile.

Now the Mayor of Bedford is complaining because HIS budget has been cut and he can't afford to put more cameras up.
 
If people knew how under funded the police were they wouldn't care that it makes them money. I'm all for it, the m60 average speed cameras have made gmp something stupid in fines, good.

Just don't get caught speeding, pretty simple.
