Almost hit by a bus this morning

What if the driver was checking his mirror to pull out from the stop, because everyone wanting to get on that was at the stop when the bus pulled up was onboard, when you were about to cross the road at his 2 o'clock position?

When he clocked me he wasn't even close to pulling off, his doors were still open. He was looking right at me.

This is one of those cases where, if you are aware of the local situation and how things normally work, you will be on OP's side. Fact of the matter is that the done thing in this situation is for the bus driver to wait, even if that's not to the letter of the law. Both the driver knows it and OP knows it, and for the driver to drive off as he did is stupid, and I would argue on the side of reckless, if not actually wrong in any sense.

But if you aren't used to catching buses in London, it really does come across on paper as "I ran in front of a bus and it swerved to avoid me, it's all his fault".

Unfortunately, when it comes to any sort of official independent judgement, I don't have that much confidence for you OP.

While I didn't enjoy my experience working in London and using the public transport, at least the chances of being run over by a bus exist there!

Back in Newcastle there is more chances of me freezing to death on a mild summers day than one turning up on time, or in some cases, turning up at all.

As a bus driver I would like to comment from my position, but I AM NOT A BUS DRIVER IN LONDON AND NO WE ARE NOT ALL THE SAME! (In fact I have won many customer commendations and driver of the year three times)

You are coming from his 2 o'clock, not at a bus stop, no Legal reason for him to wait for you if he is late or at his time point on time, if there is no one at the stop and he is on time there is no reason for him to stay there, in fact if Arriva is anything like First you can be disciplined for intentionally making your service late!

Google the Bus Users Customer Charter, Its a legal binding document that you as a bus uses agree to when you buy your ticket, part of that states you must be a the bus stop and indicate to the bus in a timely manor. There for if the bus is due at 9.45am and you arrive at 9.46am to see him pulling off even if you are waving to him don't be surprised if he doesn't let you on. Legally we are not allowed to slam on the left indicator and pull back in to the stop to let you on as it is deemed dangerous, not just for you but for other road users.

I could say a whole lot more on the subject but by all means if you have questions fire away!

Thanks for replying :)

Don't get me wrong it takes a lot for me to actually want to pursue anything. I'm not an unreasonable person and can relate to most situations that could've resulted in him pulling off but there was no excuse for his attitude. It was so blatant what he was doing, and his attitude when approached was completely out of line. I wouldn't expect to be spoken to like that by a yob on the streets, never mind someone in uniform and currently working.

That said, I wrote a review on their Facebook page. I feel better now.

If that's the case that's a reportable offense to the police. Can you say in what way racist? Did they make direct comments to you?

Not on this occasion but I've witnessed it loads. I usually just let it slide. I can't be bothered making a scene about it, it's just not worth my time.

This morning's perp was the nail in the coffin though.

Agreed no need to speak to anyone that way, as I understand if there is a highly majority of agency drivers working for arriva at the moment as the country on the whole has a national shortage of qualified drivers, mainly because pay is poor in outlying areas. (my pay is crap but I enjoy my job most of the time).

No, you're not all the same. London seems to bread a special kind of dick bus driver, those outside of London are much much better.

There's nothing wrong with stopping for a few seconds to pick up another passenger, if he's running for the bus it's because he's desperate, probably late for his job in circumstances not of his own making, or he needs to go somewhere urgent and if he's late then that person will be in trouble of some kind. It's all about customer service and London Bus driver has slim to none. It's the zero flexibility that irks a lot of people.

Surely the only thing we are going to see on that video is a person running in front of a bus and driver skilfully avoiding accident?

Btw, you don't word request under DPA in form of "please provide footage of me crossing A23", them CCTV footages they don't all go to the same place, there is no Ministry Of Cameras where day manager can should "get me all footage of Diddums on A23 Chloe, now!" in Jack Bauer voice and then send it to you - you need to request specific time frame from specific camera on specific pole or vehicle.
