K712 Pro or HD650

I didn't realize how expensive a good PC is going to be so I really can't have two main headphones. I'll buy them again sometime in future I'm pretty sure.

Having had the K7XX (modded), and now the HD650, I'd pick the 650. The XX are strikingly similar to the K712 from what I've read. The AKG is great for soundstage, but the detail and "live" feeling to music and anything with vocals is the major selling point.

I just don't get that feeling, maybe it's the years gone by of working in a noisy environment

Depends on the amplification too I guess. The 650s scale and only get better with the quality of amp you're driving them with. I'm looking forward to seeing what they sound like if/when I ever upgrade the NAD

Headphone upgrades are certainly over for me for quite some time.

Owned both the HD650 and K712, ended up keeping the HD650s. The K712 soundstage was impressive, but it had a tendency to really accentuate some higher frequencies, which made it really difficult to listen to at times. Each to their own though, everyone's ears are different and the HD650s just sit right with me.

Yeah, has to be said, whenever I use my AKGs for music, which isn't all that often, I flick on the equaliser (which rolls off the highs) while I always use the HD650s without any equalisation.

Sounds like the HD650 is something I should look at in the future but I'm really looking forward to using the 712 in gaming.

Are the highs as harsh at the DT990? I really liked everything in that headphone but the harsh highs

No, my DT990s are like an aural cheese grater compared with the AKGs, which is why they live in the wardrobe :D

Just tried them for an hour. Very impressed! they basically take what i liked about the DT990 and refined it, and removed the bad aspects like harsh highs.

The K712 still has highs but they are much more controlled than the DT990

I dont have enough experience to directly compare with other phones but the striking stand out from the DT990 is the sound stage, The sound stage is just on another level individual instruments and sounds are easy to distinguish and the music feels like it has layers now so much depth and that makes it fantastic in games as well.

One thing i prefer on the DT990 is the bass, on the K712 it's fairly tight and responsive but on the DT990 it's just more punchy and fun, im sure from an analytic point of view the K712 is probably more controlled but the bass on the DT990 is just silly fun

Very happy overall but maybe my ears just arent that well trained yet (only got into this a month ago) but at retail the K712's are £140 more... Im happy paying £40 more than the DT990 (thats what ive done, both used) but i wouldn't stretch to £140 more, diminishing returns maybe

I also own the K712 & borrowed the HD650 for a extended period. I found the bass too strong with the 650's, almost colour'd.

As "most" of you say it's down to personal taste & I don't regret my decision. :)

sounds like you would lik the phillips fidelio x1/x2 they have that beefy bass and soundstage all the details but with rolled off treble without losing treble detail.

I find the X2 the complete opposite, more V shaped with a sparkly treble but not very detailed..although the way Philips are, I wouldn't be surprised if there's some floating around with a rolled off treble! I'd actually like them better if they rolled off the treble and smoothed out that peak!

oh my x1 are very rolled off treble i thought they were all like that, did you change cables and which sources did you try ?

I hear the treble on both as airy and plenty extended but rough, brittle. The X1 has a big bass hump so it helps balance out the roughness making the X1 appear smoother, even dark to some so I can see why people see it as rolled off.

The X2 although has a bass hump, is more in line with the lower mids so the treble roughness is easier to hear.

I've tried them on a lot of sources, I preferred some of the tube hybrids with a Mullard or Orange Globe Amperex to balance the roughness out but it did also make things a little too murky at times, especially on the X1.
