980TI Extreme or 980TI Classified

I went from an EVGA 780Ti > EVGA 980Ti classified. Overclocked on both and went from 43fps Heaven 4 8xAA 1440p > 65fps on the 980 Ti.

Currently running bench and game stable at 1500 core / 4000 memory.

I would say 100% EVGA, even if its just the warranty and service factor. I did read the Gigabyte coolers are better but saying this my card holds 1500mhz on the core and never goes over 71c (80% fanspeed max)

I also think there is no point waiting as you can always say this, wait for Pascal 1080Ti, then wait for the new round of VR specific card or Pascal 2160 or whatever. Just do what I do and sell old card for ~£200, buying new for ~£400 then sell the 980Ti in a couple of years for ~£300 buying the next big thing

I have the Xtreme card, and it is a very good card, i havent tried pushing it hard yet, but it already clocks to 1440 stock. Also the fans on this card do not spin up until after 60'c so completely silent during normal desktop work.

All that said i was considering the Classified myself having had them 2 700 classifieds, but think i wanted to try something different this time, so went with the extreme.

But EVGA has got to be the best warranty/aftersales so i'd probably go that way now.

Rich.

Sorry for side stepping but I have to ask; you solved your throttling issue then?

Yes. They sent me a new one!
No more throttling at ~65c, this one doesnt throttle at 71c :) Slightly lower ASIC and clocks higher. Guess there was a slight fault with the other

http://www.3dmark.com/fs/7904915 (core and mem showing incorrect I think because onboard gpu is left on - 1500/4000)

EVGA service once again! I bet it didn't even take convincing. Hoping I won't need to do that, I'll keep that in mind. What's the easiest way to ferret out if it's throttling too quickly? I assume you do need to have an overclock in place to begin with.

I'm curious what the op decides! I smell a classy being ordered soon ;) the waiting game can be played forever alright and I've got a feeling he's better off getting one now and getting some value for the current card, perhaps using the step up but probably upgrading the Ti for Pascal Ti next year.

You sir have spot on smell , I will be ordering a classy tomorrow morning. After sales is a important thing for me so I'm sold on EVGA.

Yes, me too. I had direct replies pretty much daily, sometimes within an hour.

I have used EVGA for around 5 years now and its the first time I have had to RMA a card but have queried other things in the past and had replies.

RE throttling, the best way is to monitor clock speeds to make sure its not dropping clocks at low temperatures. All card will be different but mine now seems to like a 1500mhz boost clock with +30mV voltage increase. If I try +50mV, voltage goes too high and it either throttles or crashes. There seems to be a fine line between stable and throttle / crash. Max voltage I see in Afterburner is 1.212 required for 1500, power max 111

I have never used a Classified but have used something very similar from EVGA so I think the OP will be very pleased with his new card.

Congrats dude! Do report in how you like it!

At guest: cheers for the info, I suppose it will throttle then regardless of an OC in place if there's something wrong with it if you hit the low temperature wall. Excellent OC now too!

Yeh, they shouldnt throttle mid 60s with no overclock applied, especially (imo) as the fans by default only kick in at 60c. Ie boosts then a quick 5c increase, then throttle just as fans have started up

afterburner goes to to +50mV, precision offers up to 1.3mV. I hate the general layout of precision though and the OSD settings are not as good for monitoring.

Well got the classy today and dont regret it one little bit, cards a beast, near enough doubled frame rate in the division using same settings and i can now go ultra and still stay above 60fps.

boosts to 1430mhz all day long automatically, overall a very well built gpu by EVGA

:D, it's easily the best air cooled 980Ti on the market, apart from the KINGPIN versions which are not worth the extra for basically the same card with a all copper heat sink and the bits you never use unless you are an overclocker that does it for work. Yes they bin for ASIC on the KINGPINS too, but very rare to get a Classified without a good ASIC anyways.

Enjoy your card :).

Yes them Kingpins are overpriced and I don't know who would be silly enough to buy one.;):D:)
