What happened between the 970 and 1070?

Why would it be depressing? You can get 980 ti's now for £370 new, when just a few months ago it would cost you £500, and that's AFTER pound fell so much (whether that impacts 980 ti prices varies). Never mind that you can find second hand 980 ti's for £250 still in warranty!

It's never been better for value-conscious consumers!

Great for those who want that card and are happy buying second hand, but not really what the topic is about.

I'm discussing the prices of new GPUs with a massive price hike in the same series.

Well, 980TI's at that price are not really a bargain, they are about the same cost as a 1070 for the same performance.

The cost of a GPU wasn't what I had in mind when I voted "Leave". ;)

There's a much bigger picture which many people can't be bothered to look at.

Ok so lets take about that stuff on the gpu forum.

Yea I'm aware of that. Its part and parcel of the result though.

I appreciate the performance is a big leap, but its a next generation card - that should always be the case!

For me, if the pricing for the series isn't going to remain fairly consistent (770, 970, 1070, etc) then why even name them that way?

It implies consistency but there isn't any.

Who says it should always be the case ? We'd like it to be the case, but it isn't.

I'd like next gen CPUs to offer a big leap in performance, but I'm still using a Sandybridge, as I haven't see a big leap in performance for a few years. I have seen a big leap in performance going from a HD7950 to a GTX1070. OK, the 1070 cost about £150 more than the 7950 did, but performance and specs are way better.

Of course a new card should always offer a big performance increase. If it didn't, what's the point of releasing a new one?

It's not brexits fault

It's all AMD's

Nothing to compete, nothing to bring to the table other than a poxy 480

I know its popular amongst loyal disciples of Nvidia to blame AMD for everything but an intelligent person not blinded by religious fanaticism knows only Nvidia themselves have control of their pricing structure.

Holding AMD to account for Nvidia will not change anything Nvidia do

Of course Nvidia choose their own prices, but any company will always go for the biggest profits.

A consumer's best friend is a competition.

I don't "blame" AMD but it does disappoint me they aren't more of a threat.

The base price for the 1070 is only 50 dollars more than the 970. When the 970 came out GBP to USD was 1.6+ . Now it is 1.31...

If the exchange rate was the same as it was back then the 1070 would only be ~£30 more than the 970

Looking at a few benchmarks, it appears that the GTX1070 is approaching twice as fast as a GTX970, but it isn't twice the price. It also is more energy efficient.

The GTX1070 effectively replaces the GTX980ti (which would have been the upgrade option for GTX970 owners, before Pascal was launched). That would have meant spending around £500+ (nearly double) the cost of a GTX970 at launch.

OK, GTX1070s are not a total bargain, but some people would have you think they're stupidly expensive for what they are, when in fact they are cheaper than the product they replace despite Brexit etc.

With both a generation jump and a die shrink we should get a decent performance increase for our money but what's happened here is the bigger increase has been used as an excuse to push prices higher than they were expected to be.

Just do what I do. PC tech prices have been stupid for over a year now so I have not bought anything. There are quite a few parts I'd like an upgrade on but since greed currently rules, I've just found other things to do with my time.

When the greed stops, I will jump back in, simple :)

NV can price high due to no competition it's basic economics...

You can't blame a business for maximising profits...

Amd currently suck...they have nothing to even get close ....meaning NV are not defending anything by lowering prices...

I'll buy what ever brand....but I won't buy mediocrity to support lame amd at this time....it's bad for all of us.

That is my plan. I'm happy to start turning down some settings if I have to - but it's a shame and I was curious what others felt lead to this situation.

All good benefits, but to me, a performance boost will always be king.

I was talking about the 1070 :)

I know what he's talking about, You can call a GPU whatever you like, and Nvidia do (Founders Edition will cost you and extra £##/#) its price dictates what its replacing, the 1060 is replacing a 970.

It dissapointed me. I was waiting to see what AMD offered as an upgrade path from my HD7950. The RX480 didn't offer the step up I was looking for (1440p @ 60fps+). Having had a really bad experience the last time I bought an Nvidia card, I was reluctant to buy from them. However, so far so good. I'm very pleased with the GTX1070, and I'm glad I waited for the new cards, rather than paying more for a GTX980ti.

Its ourselves as ive said before, we don't give a **** how much they cost, as we are happy to pay it, as why else are they not just left on the shelves, or piling up in warehouses just collecting dust.

I suppose that's one way to look at it. Different from my perspective, but equally as sad, haha. :(
