AMD RX480, nVidia 1060 GTX 6GB or save a bit more for 1070GTX?

This has probably been the most interesting post, thank you. So realistically, how much of a difference would this make to steam streaming etc, I can't think it would do too much if at all to this nature of work?

Congrats on that great deal with the GTX 1070!

Also for streaming they're all the same, bar raw FPS. The 1070 at the moment is faster in all games than the 480, so you got a great card.

For streaming Intel's QuickSync is better quality wise than both NV or AMD's alternatives; although it is a bit more demanding.

So in those cases the 1070 with better performance is still the best card out of the 3 you considered.
Especially with that deal you got.

I got a similar one on my Fury X, when I was looking to get the 480, and managed to get my FX for €80 more.

The 1070 is a very powerful card, no doubt about that and I am sure you will enjoy it a lot.

I can't help but feel though in a year the 1070 will have run it's course and the 480 will be much closer to it on average.

Yea NVidia just love to stop supporting "old" cards once the new ones arrive and their AMD equivalent catch up or pull ahead. Like what happened with the 7xx series :/

So not only has the 480 overtaken the 1060 it's hot on the heals of the 1070! Won't be long before its gunning down the 1080! Gotta love that AMD driver support. Give it another few months and the Titan will fall. Who knows where it could be in 10 years.

More powerful than Skynet?

I'd rather pay my money get my performance now and move on when I feel the need for it than have a card that caught up about the time I was planning to upgrade anyhow.

Thats ok if what you are looking for is a £350 card, not if what you are looking for is a £250 card

I said in a year it'll be closer to it. How is that saying anything about now? Are you denying that using more modern rendering methods the 480 does generally outperform the 1060 even now?

In DX12 they are fairly equal although the 1060 does overclock better than the 480. In dx11 the 1060 is ahead by a good margin. Check the benchmarks on these forums.

Please show me one reputable review that puts the 480 ahead of the 1060.

I can find you at least 10 without trying that put the 1060 ahead.in fact here is a round up of 240 benchmarks https://m.reddit.com/r/nvidia/comments/4tyco0/the_truth_about_480_vs_1060/

Both cards maxed and they are pretty equal. Just so you know the 1060 is boosting around 2050 and the clocks stated are what he has set. This is a review after voltage control became available.

1060 will do another 100mhz though and yes pretty equal in that review. Certainly not a winning review for the 480.

I would say it's pretty equal yea. The conclusion had this to say.

Our sample was able to reach 1400+ MHz, which gave us the opportunity to put RX 480 and GTX 1060 face to face at highest overclocking settings. It produced some interesting results proving that GTX 1060 and RX 480 indeed have similar potential. RX 480 clearly offers better framerate in DX12 titles.

Going forward i would be happier with the RX480. It's already a good match for the gtx1060 and will only get stronger as time goes on. More Vram might count as well.

The 1070 is too fast for the 480 to catch up to.

The 480 will perform better later on indeed but in no way will it be 25-30 fps faster due to drivers in the future.

I believe that it may surpass the 1060 eventually though.

I agree, I also said closer, not faster than. I do believe the gap will shrink but never disappear.

I also believe the 480 will eventually surpass the 1060, I just don't think anyone will care by the time it does. In the same way that no one cares about gtx 770 performance today.

We do how ever still care about 290/x which is still going strong in the form of 390/390x which crap all over the gtx780/780ti.

The reason nobody cares about the gtx770 is because its not good enough. The 7970 however is still a half decent card.

I think crapping all over is your enthusiasm.

A 390x still can't match a 780ti in the Heaven dx11 benchmark so one could say the 390x is slower.

I'm not saying that btw, just calling you out on your guff.

So I've now installed the GTX 1070 and its much quieter than my old 270x by Sapphire. Just fit the case, which I expected, and runs really well... Scored 3x higher in the latest 3dmark just by changing the GPU.

Only tried Fallout 4 and F1 2016, both max details at 1080p and no performance problems at all. Very happy even it is overkill as the 270x was running at medium settings and still a little stuttery.

Must say though that the AMD crimson is so much nicer to use than the crap that nVidia have produced, smarter looking and I think easier to find stuff.

Glad it's all working great, and it certainly is a massive upgrade.

Happy gaming mate!
