As above really...

Is it worth upgrading my GTX980 to a GTX1080, playing at 1920x1080/120Hz at the moment, and I'd expect the cost of around £500 for the 1080, am I going to notice any particular difference ?

I went 980 to 1080 (though I also went 1440p/144hz) and I got a 1080 from the MM for £400. You will be able to crank up more settings and get higher FPS.

However, I am not so sure its worthwhile at 1080p. Unless you are struggling in any games I probably wouldn't bother and would wait a while.

In a word no. At 1080p, even a 980 is overkill at the moment. You could wait until at least the next generation of GPUs, and I would hazard a guess that even those would not offer much over a 980 at that resolution. If you wanted to go to 1440p or higher, or high refresh rate monitors then you may have a case for an upgrade.

For 1440P/4K I'd say yes, sometimes the GTX1080 can get low FPS even at those so not sure what a 980 will be getting, probably slideshow.

980 is far far from overkill at 1080p.

I went from 980ti to 1080 gtx at the time switching as well from 1920x1080 120HZ to 2560x1440 144HZ , was worth it 2 years ago im not sure now , might as well wait till something new releases . then upgrade

edit: like 1170

The difference in power is BIG, but do you actually need the power? If you are already achieving a good frame-rate, then you don't need a 1080. Also, the next generation of GPU's from NVIDIA are probably going to appear this year. Maybe if it's not critical you could wait till then?

Beyond an average of 60 FPS, you will struggle to see any difference. I've managed fine with just 10 year old card with Battlefield 3 and really the highest settings I turn down because it's easier to see without so much bling going on, and have higher frame rates as a bonus.

Unless you're doing 3D modelling / rendering and video production at 4K, these high end cards are pretty much overkill at 1080P.

New graphics cards from Nvidia just around the corner. I'd wait...
+1

I went from a 980 GTX to 1080 GTX but only because I went from a 1080p to 4k monitor, glad I upgraded although it was a couple of years ago and the 1080 was £380 (MM). With a new card just round the corner I'd defiantly wait, MM will no doubt have plenty of 1080 GTX's for sale soon...

If it was me i would be putting that £400 toward buying a better 1440p monitor if i only had a 1080p one

Who the hell plays PC games at only 1080p these days.....
The monitor is the very most important part of a gaming system or any PC system as that the part you spend hours on top of hours everyday looking at..

According to steam the majority are. I've been spoilt with 3440x1440 so I couldn't go back to 1080 now, but there's nothing wrong with that resolution.

I’m still gaming at 1080p... I’ve saved a fair amount of money on monitors and GPUs!

I might get a new monitor to coincide with my next GPU upgrade but only if I can find one cheap enough. I tend to stick with hand-me-down monitors, my current HP 23XI is relatively nice!

As for a 1080 being overkill at 1080p, I’m not so sure, there are plenty of games that would utilise the power

Still using a 2560x1080, 160hz VA monitor for gaming on. I find while gaming the difference isn't that noticeable going up to 1440, especially when you add in anti-aliasing etc. It's mainly just on the desktop.
