Dont really think it matters once the user is getting the performance at their desired resolution/settings, at the end of the day thats all that matters.

I think the issue is that being now 2 year old technology, means that if you do buy it, and are indeed happy with it, it would not last as long as you'd expect since it's already 2 years old. This means you'd need to replace it sooner to keep up with the newest games you might want to play, which means spending more money sooner. I mean if the prices were actually less than they were two years ago, then your argument would hold more weight, but they are the same price, not to mention new cards are due to land in the next few months.

I think I'd bite on a 1070Ti @ £279.99~£319.99, anything else feels excessive given how old these cards are. If you can't get it for under £300 you may as well add a bit more and get the brand new variant in a few months.

It was a direct response to the Vega 56 as the Vega was beating the 1070 out easy enough. Nvidia wanted to keep there 1080 at the same pricing so went for a card in between to compete at a price in between. They could just have lowered prices on the 1080/1070 but didn't want to go that route.

I personally think it was more of a marketing exercise, gets them some press coverage, make it look like they are realising new product, and allows them to keep the price of the 1080 artificially high, increasing margins on the GPU's since many people would have done as you suggested and just skipped it. It would be interesting to see how many 1070Ti's have actually been shipped and sold vs. the 1080 in the same period of time.

I expect the 1170 to definitely be faster than the 1080 and be no more than 10% slower than a 1080Ti.

If the last two x70 cards (970 and 1070) are anything to go by compared to the respective 780Ti and 980Ti, the 1170 should be slightly faster over time than the 1080Ti as NVIDIA prioritises optimising the newest gen. The difference should be marginal/imperceptible though in a real world test.
