New card, primarily for VR

Looking to update my system soon, currently running an R9 280x so will need to update for VR goodness.

Will be likely picking up a Ryzen 7 CPU so there should be no issues with bottlenecking, any suggestions as to cards recommended?

Primary use will be racing sims, and I'm leaning towards the Rift over the Vive.

Would a 1070ti be plenty of grunt, or is it worth dropping the extra £60 for a 1080? AMD alternatives? I'm not up to scratch on the Vega cards

Form factor is reasonably important too as it'll be going into a Silverstone Raven ITX case, length isn't much of an issue but thickness might be, not sure if a 3 slot card will work so 2 slots are preferred

Being a Rift owner and a big fan of it, I have had no issues with a 1080 and the Rift, so I see no reason a 1070Ti wouldn't be able to cope. They run nice and cool also, so in a smaller case, you won't have an issue.

Not heard anything bad about Palit either, so save a few squid and go with this one if you are going for a 1070Ti

Edit:

Forget that one and go for the 5 year warranty with Zotac and grab this little beauty. Great cooling also.

I've had no problems on an 8gb rx480 with a Rift. They aren't as demanding as some make out, got to remember they are only running at 1080x1200. If a game runs ok on a 1080 monitor it will probably be fine in VR. The HMDs themselves are quite good at smoothing out any FPS dips (to a point).

I would avoid the Zotac mini 1070ti due to coil whine issues being more common on those.

I used both a 1070 and 1080ti and a regular 1070 gets the job done. Only some games such as Project cars 2 struggled even on the 1080ti with high to very settings and needed a lot of tweaking to get it to look and run right. Supersampling was needed more than other game that I own and still didn't look right.

That game needs more optimizations especially during rain or night time races.

For everything else in VR I found the 1070 good enough.

A lot of VR title aren't that demanding, sure, but the OP's playing race sims. It's in a different league of requirements if he wants to achieve the best compromise of visuals and performance compared to the average VR title.

For my Rift I went from a 1080 to 1080Ti on an FX8350, then moved the 1080Ti to an R7 1700, the CPU upgrade was only done cause I wanted to try AMDs new CPU lineup, the FX8350 was fine and I still use it for non-gaming :)

The 1080Ti allows for more SS which makes a difference, the best example is Elite Dangerous as the text becomes a lot clearer once setup properly.

Remember the goal is driving dual HD screens at 90FPS so can be quite demanding depending how optimised the game is.

I have the Palit 1070Ti and the Oculus. Runs it fine. I haven't benchmarked the rift, but the only thing I have seen ASW kick in and it frame out a bit was in DCS world with the sliders all maxed, including tree and ground clutter maxed with a draw distance maxed and preload maxed. It only did it once. DCS World can generate a massive amount of load.

In other games, such as Race Room Experience project cars the 1070Ti is running at around 85% utilisation, even while doing a partial screen mirror.

My 1070Ti is water cooled (Kraken G12/X62) and overclocked, but the Rift is still fine if I run it at stock clocks.

I recall the screen mirroring doesn't actually cause a performance hit as a single scene is rendered and just output to two destinations, or something along those lines :D

As above, running Rift with a 1070Ti and it's been flawless so far.

Looking forward to 4k or 8k headsets though, pretty sure we'll need at least a 1080Ti for smooth running.

I have had a 1070, Vega 64 and a 1080Ti and they all ran VR pretty well.

There was a noticeable improvement moving from the 1070 to the Vega 64, but I wouldn't call it game changing.

Between the Vega 64 and the 1080Ti, the performance increase has been negligible. Haven't noticed any difference at all.

My advice would be to get the best card you can afford that fits in your case especially if you only upgrade every few years.

I'd check to see if you can squeeze a Zotac Amp in your case, It's the same price as the mini at the moment and as well as having a 5 year warranty (you must register it with Zotac to get the full 5 years) it seems to be highly rated by users.

What about the VR link on the 20xx series? Won't that change anything or factor into peoples decisions?

Wouldn't affect my decision personally at the moment, there are 10 series cards that utilise VR Link and unless I'm missing something obvious, I can't see why it's a "must have" at the moment, for my set-up and gaming habits anyway (Rift + 1070Ti).
