I have an older version of this

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Modern-Bathroom-Shaver-Socket-Switch/dp/B01H3SOCFK?ref_=fsclp_pl_dp_4

want to replace with something like this

https://www.ikea.com/gb/en/products/lighting/bathroom-lighting/ledsjö-led-wall-lamp-stainless-steel-art-40359761/

I take it I need to buy a switch as the light doesn't have one yet the old one did that is a given. What type of switch can I use inside a bathroom? It will get some condensation, etc.

I have a hole in wall with 2 wires which split into 3 wires each. 2 earths wrapped around each other going into thin air. 2 positives 1 from each wire connected to each other going into a electrical connector and the same for the negatives. So this then means I had 1 positive going into the shaver light and 1 negative with no earth being used.

The wires I have now are live with no way to turn off.

My idea was to buy a fused switch like this

https://www.screwfix.com/p/mk-13a-dp-switched-fused-connection-unit-with-flex-outlet-white/13479

stick it inside a cabinet and then use that to connect to the ikea light above.

All wiring will be outside of the wall hidden inside of cabinet. Some slightly external going from switch to ikea light which will be placed directly above cabinet. Is that okay? As in a like a cm of wire in the bathroom going from switch inside cabinet to the light. Or does it need to be in behind the wall?

Easier to just buy the correct fitting tbh, they do make these with pullcords or you can probably find a motion sensor version so you can just move your hand under to turn on

Because these usually have a built in switch the wiring to them is permanently live, but you could just make them come on with the ceiling light or add another switch for the room etc rather than putting a switch near the light or in cabinet

I would probably change it to just come on with the main light, just need to move the live going to the mirror light from the live loop terminal to the switch live terminal at the ceiling light

You would normally only have 1 cable at the mirror light so not sure why you have 2? this may mean it also supplies a shaver point or something which then would only work with the light on etc

More info needed

i think we had 2 cables as it was both a light and a shaver socket. however they were joined using an electrical connector. so have no idea tbh which is why i'm asking. also to connect it to the main room light would be a pain for me i'd need to get a sparky in which for such a small job wouldn't be worth it to me. i think this was installed by the original home builders, not by any previous home owner. it had a date of 1999 on it which was around the time the house was built. so i think whatever they have done is okay.

anyway I have now ordered this

https://www.hib.co.uk/products/mirrors/globe-60/

got it for £215 it's a 80 cm by 60cm mirror which i will use in portrait mode. it has a built in switch for led's and demister. it also has colour changing led's for a cold blue or a more natural yellow light, etc.

it states this

"Globe mirrors must be installed with a minimum distance of 150mm between the infra-red sensor switch and any adjacent wall or object to ensure correct operation of the sensor."

it's only going to have a minimum distance of 110-120mm in order for it to sit in line with the tiles below. so it's going to be 3-4cm short. do you think that will be okay? i could move it to the left a bit however it wouldn't look as good. it would be offset so to speak. it's only slightly off their recommendation.

It should already be connected to the room light if its wired the usual way - that should be where the supply is coming from light > mirror etc

Not sure about the sensor - could always rotate the mirror and have the sensor high up but might be too high for kids - so instead of sensor on bottom RHS it could be top LHS etc - doesn't seem to be any reason it cant be rotated, didn't see a charger point etc

can't do. the holes for hanging it are only on one side at the top only.

or just get one of these with a pull cord
https://www.sparksdirect.co.uk/caba...r-with-pull-switch-for-bathroom-wall-lighting
otherwise £200 seems a lot of money to pay for a sensor, plus if they are inbuilt/non-replaceable leds.

I just have decent 4k bulbs for the bathroom ... don't find yellowy 2.7/3K bulbs or 6k attractive

it's £200 for the mirror, demister and LED lights all in one. plus it looks the part.

as for in built / non replaceable. do you know what the lifetime expectancy of LED's is? do you know the average life expectancy of a bathroom before it gets redecorated?

anyway i got the https://www.hib.co.uk/products/mirrors/globe-60/ and it is fantastic. so much so i know i will be buying another for the main bathroom. plus yours was £100 just for a light mine was £215 for everything all in one.

I know what led lifetime is theoretically, but the reality with non-branded led bulbs, with poor heat dissipation .. 2 of 3 ebay bulbs i used in kitchen failed within a year, but USA cree&hyperikon brand have not failed , hyperikon >10K hours. .. so I have learned my lesson
.... but ok there is a warranty.
