8700K to a 9900K, worth it?

Hello all.

I'm seriously tempted to replace my 8700K with a 9900K. BUT im sceptical over whether the 9900K will be better in games, as my 8700K OC's to 5100MHz. I'm not sure whether the 9900K will clock as well as my 8700K. Is it worth the switch?? I'm 50/50 over it.
 
No, IMO. Either wait for AMD's next 3000 series or Intel's next gen (post 14nm hopefully). THe most compelling use case would be something that uses all the cores, where the 9900K would be theoretically 33% faster. At this stage for gaming I'd look at whatever AMD or Intel release next.
 
more cores always better then threads , but wouldn't say its worth going 8700k to 9700k. know you've mentioned 9900k but would only if your doing heavy workloads that will take advantage of extra threads from Hyper threading .

5.1ghz off the 8700k is good!

save your cash

plus 9900k at 5ghz would start to cook some VRMS!

That's why I made sure to mention both companies :). I used to think the same way until I used an AMD TR 1950X which was awesome. Sold now but waiting for either the 3000 series or next TR's which I then intend to keep for 5+ years.

The last time I owned an AMD CPU was the Athlon 64 many, many years ago lol

There's been a lot of this outdated mentality on here lately and I just don't get it. Why not AMD? They have come a long way since the awful FX series cpu's and Ryzen is the best value for money platform at the moment and has more longevity with AM4 being stuck with until 2020. The new Ryzen that is coming around the middle of the year could even take the performance crown from Intel if all the hype is to be believed. In the meantime Intel churns out refresh after refresh with barely any performance increases with each release which usually requires a new motherboard as well yet charge ridiculous prices for their cpu's. AMD undercuts them at each price point while offering more cores and threads and you can drop any Ryzen cpu in any AM4 motherboard up to and including 2020. AMD are back with a bang and should be seriously considered when building a pc. I went Intel again but really should have waited for the new Ryzen as my "upgrade" was more of a sidegrade.

On a sidenote, no I don't think a 9900k is a worthwhile upgrade from a 8700k. All you would really be gaining is a pair of extra cores and threads. I don't think that anything at the moment is a worthwhile upgrade from a 8700k, especially one at 5.1Ghz.
 
I'm on a 3820 @4.8, even I'm still wondering if an upgrade is worth it for gaming.

An 8700k has got 5 years at least before you need to worry. Unless that extra 1fps matters?
 
I upgrade everything on an annual basis. Ill probably wait till Intel's next gen this year. And as for AMD... they're just not the best for gaming plain and simple, its been like that for years now. My PC is geared towards gaming and thats why I choose Intel over AMD all the time. IF and I mean IF AMD bring out a CPU thats faster than what Intel can offer for gaming and the benchmarks prove it then I might reconsider. It would need to overclock better too, and AMD CPU's don't overclock well, if at all.

I had a good reason for going with Intel and that was that single core performance is everything for the simulators that I play. I do regret not waiting though because if the hype and rumours are to be believed then AMD may have a winner on their hands soon. The problem for me was that it was taking so long and in the end I gave up waiting.

a 8700k is a massive difference over your cpu. a 8700k to a 9900 though isnt worth it. especially clocked high.
 
I went 8086k to 9900k and it depends on your usages. Purely for gaming then I would say no not really.

If you can make use of those two cores elsewhere then it depends on what you value.

Although really wish I kept my Delidded 7920x as that did 4.9ghz cooler than the 9900k does :(

However it is still a good chip and the extra 2 cores/4 threads do make a difference in rendering, editing for me. And it didn’t cost all that much once I sold my 8086k.
