Amazonia Burning Nearly 3 Weeks now...

"We are told that Amazon fires are at record levels right now. This is a blatant lie. The only “record” is that Amazonian fires have DECREASED over the “record”

https://wattsupwiththat.com/2019/08/23/amazon-fire-history-since-2003/

Not sure why there is all this hype about the fires, 2019 is a long way from being a record, trying to make someone look bad?

Surely "number of fires" is different to "record amount of rainforest destroyed"? Yes, the total number of fires in July 2019 isnt a record, its a long way off but that doesnt mean that the total acreage destroyed by fire in July isnt a record and surely thats the more important figure?

Maybe, i have not seen how much acreage has been burnt, but thats not how its being reported by the BBC is it.

"The French and German leaders say the record number of fires in Brazil's Amazon rainforest is an international crisis which must be discussed at this weekend's G7 summit."

It's about time that the richer nations started paying Brazil 'rent' to maintain its rainforest.
that's not actually a bad call. perhaps even a financial incentive to replant the areas destroyed by clearing for farming/logging/natural fires.

look at that, GD has just solved the climate crisis....who'd have thunk it, something good coming out of GD! we need to get a delegation gathered up to go to the G7 summit. I'm nominating @Diddums, that dude can talk and has a certain charm about him. we'd also need to dig up @Castiel though to do the fact finding first, he could google the **** out of it. just need someone to second them and the motion is carried. :D

I agree and technically the French and German leaders have got it wrong. But, if its a record amount being burned as reported by the Guardian in that link you gave then there are right to draw attention to it. Interestingly, despite the site wattsupwiththat using the guardian screenshot on it was the largest acreage lost, they only went on the disprove the claim that it was a record number of fires.

I believe countries already do pay Brazil Amazon protection money, which is why Norway and Germany are now refusing to pay it as its obviously not working

Maybe future wars will be fought over oxygen production rather than oil, guess its a bit harder to package and sell though.

did not know that. wars have been fought over less worthy causes and you could well be right. perhaps military intervention will be needed in the future to prevent the mass destruction of the rainforests. i'd certainly be far more in favour of that than invading a country for it's oil reserves. but no one's going to do that, no money in fresh air - yet

I saw this on instagram and twitter about 4 days ago and it appears no one was covering it. It had been burning for over 2 weeks at that point at a record rate.
It seems only now, since DiCaprio and a couple of celebs starting posting about it, that the news outlets are bothering to cover it...

That rainforest produces a 5th of all oxygen the world has, you'd think it'd be a bigger deal?

Why is it a big deal, aren't forests supposed to burn, it's part of nature and makes way for new growth. Happens all around the world often.

I don't know why people link this garbage website.

It's literally run by some climate change denier asshat. I've not read the fire article quite frankly I can't be bothered.

But I remember reading older articles on that website about climate change being a hoax from 2008 etc, it literally gave me aids. They also carefully pick and choose any shoddy scientific data that supports their delusions. This website is why I absolutely despise conspiracy retards. It's a bunch of boomers masquerading as scientists because they can post a few references/sources. Then they wonder why the younger generation hate them.

Edit: I'm also aware each blog post I think is written by a different author? So I can't speak for all of them but the agenda of that website is quite clear. "Climategate". Ok bro.

I mean it's great that we expect Brazil to not turn it's rain forest into farming land, but last time I looked England wasn't exactly covered in forests, maybe we should also plant more trees at home?

If all photosynthesis stopped tomorrow there's enough Oxygen in the Earths biome for humans to breathe happily for 1,000 years, just FYI. *edit correction*

Wouldn't excess carbon dioxide kill us before then though?

The Ocean absorbs a lot of C02, that's why high levels of C02 in the atmosphere make the sea more acidic and kill off coral reefs and animals that have exoskeletons made of calcium

I agree this could be a good idea as well.

It certainly puts a lot of responsibility on Brazil to maintain the rainforests if it's a source of income for their economy.

What i find more amazing is just how arrogant the Brazilian president is to all this scientific evidence - this just strikes me as exactly like the Russians and Chernobyl when they refused to accept that it was a big deal, until eventually it clearly was a big deal.

I'd be interested to know the repercussions if the Amazonian rainforest did get wiped out, they say the impact would likely affect every country in the world, but presumably the impact would be considerably worse much closer to Brazil.

I believe Germany and other EU countries where paying the Brazilian gov to help protect the Amazon etc, but they money wasn't going anywhere near helping and they stopped supporting it.

Was there anything in particular you disagreed with?
Or was it that your feelings were hurt when your world view was challenged by someone with more knowledge than you?

Your the only one defending the burning down of a unique ecosystem, why is that? The fact is that the Amazon is a serious issue for everyone, not just the Brazilians, quite literally the definition of a national security risk if they wish to burn down 20% of the Oxygen content, ignoring the massive increase in Carbon concentrations.

It could very well be a reason to sanction Brazil heavily or even go to war over.

Doesn’t it burn naturally on a regular basis?

It seems more like this story has simply come about because a bunch of celebs have shared the same picture on Instagram and a bunch more people have been like:

“OMG, the Amazon Rainforest is burning, why aren’t the media covering it? What don’t ‘they’ want us to know?”

Without any context as to whether this is normal relative to previous fires etc...etc...

In other news, Instagram is changing its rules, please copy and paste this legal nonsense to your profile stating blah blah blah...
