Anything worth upgrading to? Current is 4790K, 1080, 16gb DDR3

Hey Chaps,

Just wondering if there is much to gain, aside from itching the upgrade bug, to getting my PC refit with some new parts. I play a lot of games, at 3440 x 1440 with a monitor that can do 120hz, as well as photoshop work and general business related stuff.

Current system is:
4790K, not overclocked but could do
1080
850w Psu (an expensive one)
4 x 4gb DDR3 Ram

I currently have a small loop with the CPU in it, the GPU keeps nice and cool on its own. Looking at possibly going for Ryzen 3800X and sticking 2x8gb sticks in side it to get me going. It would be nice to get full use out of my £800 monitor, as I only get maybe 60 FPS on most games with the thing. Do I need to look at getting a new GPU as well? Is SLI still a thing?

Thanks,
Grady

You need to determine where the bottleneck lies. Find out what is stopping you from getting 120 fps. Fire up Task Manager on a second monitor and play your games. Look at the CPU and GPU performance. Make sure you show per core performance on the CPU. Is anything getting pegged at or near 100%? If your CPU is at 95%+ and the GPU is well below that then you will benefit from a CPU upgrade.

An 8 core CPU like the Ryzen 3700 is going to be a good upgrade performance wise, especially with new games.

Looks like my rig Ax860i 4770k at 4.3 which is equal to 4790k basically. I put a 2080ti in there and i get 120fps at 4k. World of tanks 4k 170fps, Timespy 14161 gfx score 8k on the cpu.

What you need is just a 2080ti unless you play really intensive cpu games but you need to overclock a bit. The uncore and core get them to 4600mhz each with 2400mhz ram maybe at 1T like myself its still good for 3440x1440 and 3840x2160. If the upgrade budget is about £899-£1100 that is what i would do the 2080ti will nearly double the fps from a 1080.

Also 4x4gb over 2x8gb was a bad choice too in hindsight, Not good to fully load the Haswell ram slots when overclocking!

Doesn't matter, it looks awesome :D (its some glowing red RAM, wanted all 4 slots lit up :D, do not regret!).

Okay, I'll have to have a think. Dropping what amounts to a whole system on a GPU is a big undertaking but... its the only way to make use of my bloody monitor!
