im looking to upgrade my pc and was wondering if i should go with a b450 with ryzen 5 3600 + 16gb ddr4 3000mhz or intel and a 1151 mobo and 16gb DDR4 3000mhz?

Go for the AMD kit - 1151 is a dead socket; you might want to consider the B550 when it comes out shortly, but the B450 is still very good

Hi Shane,

Well on the AMD front I'd get some faster RAM. 3600Mhz if you can or 3200Mhz on a decent B-die kit so you can OC it to 3600Mhz. I'd go AMD as there will still be another Generation of CPU's that'll go in that board.

3600, decent mobo you can drop a 16 core in later down the line too, also 3600mhz ram :)

Edit: or huff some paint and go Intel lol

+1.

Zen2 TBH is much better at attaining higher RAM MHz on even other RAM IC besides Samsung B die. Micron E-die based dimms I'd say are a better buy as can usually be had for less and can reach 3600MHz with minimal fuss. Yeah Samsung B die still may allow tighter timings, but the return is so little for outlay that your better off using that spend on a better GPU, etc IMO.

I'd recommend either the b450 tomahawk max, mortar max or pro carbon depending on what features you need paired with a ryzen 5 3600.

Depends whether the OP can OC RAM or not or wants to learn how to. Plus it looks like he's keeping his current Gfx card as it wasnt mentioned in the OP as a part he was looking to purchase. So out of the 2 systems - an AMD setup will give higher frame rates with some faster RAM.

6 core 12 threaded CPU's has been selling like crazy for a while now so buying a 6 core only CPU in 2020, even if it's mostly for gaming just does not feel right anymore.

It depends on the games - if you intend to play a mix of old and new games, and want something more futureproof I would get the Ryzen 5 3600,or maybe the Ryzen 5 3600X as it is much closer in price now,has a better cooler and has a better games bundle. If you are running only older games, and are willing to overclock the Core i5 9600K,it might have a niche(something like Fallout 4 or GTA V for example),but you are looking yourself into a socket which is going to be EOL soon and has a much more expensive upgrade path core for core.

3600 if i could do it again, i only went with the 9600kf because it was a steal at the time from a competitor. a lot of the early adopter issues with this series of AMD cpu's have been ironed out as well so its a no brainer tbh.

The 9600K is higher clocked than the Ryzen 3600/X so in most games it is a little faster, really not by much, under 10% on a 2080TI at 1080P.

The trade off is it only has 6 cores 6 threads and paired with such a high end GPU it does stutter in a couple of games, where as the Ryzen 3600 with 6 cores 12 threads does not, if you do some productivity work on the side the Ryzen 3600 is also much faster.

You're probably not going to be pairing a 9600K or a Ryzen 3600 with a 2080TI, so you're not going to get that stuttering with the 9600K with a lower end GPU, however you're also not going to see a performance difference between the two CPU's.

IMO the Ryzen 3600 is a better long term investment, the Intel socket is dead end, the AM4 socket is ready for the next generation Ryzen and the 3600 with 12 threads is going to cope much better than the 9600K if games get more multithreaded over the next 3 years or however long you plan on keeping the CPU.

3600/X get the X if its only £10 or £20 more.
B450 Tomahawk Max.
16GB DDR4 3200Mhz to 3600Mhz, if you can afford 3600Mhz get that, its best.

If the security updates are installed for the intel cpu, this is not the case though. Whether or not an average user decides to patch the vunerabilities is upto them, ofc.
