What "man jobs" have you done today?

I don't have anywhere to burn wood in my house now but I used to clamp my hatchet in my vice and hit straight grain bits of wood against it with a hammer. Very quick to make up lots of kindling without risking your fingers ;)

Cut the grass for the first time this year, although after the winter is seems to be more moss than grass in places. If I can get some treatment then as least 'i've got the time to soft it out over the next few weeks.

Thanks bit not as much fun as swinging an axe

:D

Very nice! No you are right it is not as much fun. BUT much easier on the back, especially as I was making boxes and boxes of it for my brother and dad too! Actually I still do it from time to time for them lol.

I also have a granfors bruk splitting maul, which is quite light for a maul (3kg I think). I used to use that to make kindling too like in your picture. No need to swing the maul tho, just let its weight drop on to some straight grained bits of wood and it would split without any effort.

Oh wow! I Did my first cut in January when we had a warm ish spell!

Our lawns had their first cut about a month ago. The lawnmower put up a real fight to get started but it got there in the end and now it's starting first time most of the time.

The council aren't collecting garden waste at present so we're just leaving the grass cuttings on the lawn which the birds seem to really like.

The Fiskas is a splitting axe so the weight of dropping the axe usually does for kindling

A good swing is usually enough to get them split down and great exercise :D

Another day in the sun in the garden

First off dug out two tree stumps from trees I cut down about 18months ago

Opened up the view across the back garden and out across the garden from the spare room and mancave on the ground floor :D

Might do the smaller one tomorrow

Still another 8 or so to be done down the side and front and then the stumps ......

Continuing with the fireplace - there's many layers of paint to remove but have got the bulk of it off now. Have just got a second coat of paint stripper on there for removing tomorrow.

What paint stripper are you using? I got one called Starchem sinstrip off ebay and that stuff was very good. Horrendous on the lungs mind lol. Nitromors used to be a good one but it's crap now cos it doesn't contain the dodgy chemicals that do the work.

Brush the stripper on then cover it with a paper for best result.

Just any old paper? I hadn't heard of that and probably should have posted sooner, may have saved me a lot of time :D This is the 3rd application, it was painted white/cream originally, and then black so all of the detail.

I've been using the no nonsense brand.

You use a wax paper and it retains the moisture of the paint stripper/gel. Slap it on, stick paper over top of it and return next day to peel it all off.

The trouble is the EU banned something in paint stripper (google says methalene chloride) which made it very effective. You've done a seemingly good job on yours but if you can find a paint stripper with that chemical in the difference is quite significant.

Damage to the environment is also probably significant lol.

I've been making the most of some extra days off from work. Finished decorating the last two window boards today (literally just glossed these two). I only had 8 in total to do but they all looked very tired, yellow, dirty etc.

Not so much a man job today but finishing touches -- During those windy storms we had the fence between us and next door suffered a bit so wife made the decision to go plastic. _ Some one on road to Whitchurch has put up a plastic fernce and to us it looked quite good so after a lot of looking around we ended for brown - it doesn't sound good but to be honest I am really pleased with it.
The only problem we had was last neighbour who wanted to take down a few of the concrete post and put gavel boards in so his side which is lower than ours looked better so I said carry on. So mr mouth almighty wasn't as good at jobs he thought he was -gravel boards are up and down which meant a lot of packing under the new panels.- The bottoms of the panels are half round just the right size to accept a 40mm waste pipe so put a pipe under each base panel which has made it easier to level.
Was only going to do up to the shed but was so impressed I did all but last three to the end of garden - We don't see them because of shed-greenhouse and oil tank but at least I haven't got to fix them if they were wood.
By way we are responsible for the right hand side as is everyone else.

ps - and neighbour couldn't get posts upright. I think the picture makes it look even worse - it isn't far out. But just not vertical .

Had the decking packs delivered this morning.
Went for composite and they look pretty good if heavy. Had to move them all through the house as the weather got hotter so that was fun.
Start building the frame tomorrow and clearing the other area. Having 2 areas of it so lots to do.

Today is bathroom wall crack day.. I've fixed many cracks in plaster in this place by ripping back to the block work to investigate. This one will be no different, the main concern is this is horizontal 1/2 way between the window and the ceiling.. add that we had window opening issues (although this may be down to the replacement window mechanism) which could indicate movement of the window frame itself. Getting back to the block/lintel is going to be needed.

Painted the soil stack at the rear.

Had fascias, soffits, gutters and downpipes changed a few months back, was being let down by the soil stack.

Looks much better now.

Next job is the windows (not defective, but top openers have a rose motif and look a bit old fashioned), but have an extension planned in next 18 months so will probably tie this in with the project).

Tidied up the shed, put some hooks i ordered up to hold the garden tools and just a general sort out, much tidier now!

Next on the list is to burn the crap out of my bbq as it's got a delightful coating of mould after being sat over winter, Deeeelicious.
