So, the last time I built a new PC was in January 2011 (See my "Spec me" thread from 10 years ago here!)

And here is the final setup I went with.

Had a couple of hard disks die, the GPU died and so did the PSU. I've now got a GTX 970, a modular Corsair PSU and an SSD, as well as doubling the RAM.

As I'm approaching 10 years, I think it's definitely time for an upgrade, especially as the system has become a bit more unstable in 10 years!

I generally use the PC for work, running 2 x LG-27UK670 27" monitors. I'm also a casual gamer, my main games of choice are, FIFA, a range of 3rd person games (Hitman, GTA, Metal Gear Solid) and a few racers, Forza, Need for Speed etc

Here's a breakdown of my current setup from Speccy:

Operating System
Windows 10 Pro 64-bit

CPU
Intel Core i7 2600K @ 3.40GHz 35 °C
Sandy Bridge 32nm Technology

RAM
16.0GB Dual-Channel DDR3 @ 668MHz (9-9-9-24)

Motherboard
ASUSTeK Computer INC. P8P67 DELUXE (LGA1155) 32 °C

Graphics
LG Ultra HD (3840x2160@60Hz)
LG Ultra HD (3840x2160@60Hz)
4095MB NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970 (Gigabyte) 50 °C

Storage
931GB SAMSUNG HD103SJ (SATA) 29 °C
465GB Samsung SSD 850 EVO 500GB (SATA) 33 °C

I've been a bit out of the game for a while and not kept up with the latest PC component trends. So, not sure what kinda budget to set. I'd love to go for a PC that will give me as good use as I have out of my current setup.

What’s your budget? Does the work you do require any special consideration for memory quantity or core count?

I work in IT, but as far as I'm aware, the most technical strenuous tasks I do work wise are running virtual machines for testing and the odd video editing, though I tend to use more cloud based video editors now.

A lot has happened in 10 years (several recessions, covid etc) so I don't really know about budget. Would £600 be reasonable, or would I need to go higher? I don't really want to spend as much as last time!

Reuse your psu , ssd and gtx 970 you could upgrade thd cpu, motherboard and memory.

Intel
10400f £140
B450 motherboard £100
16gb or 32gb memory £60 to £120.

Amd
3600 £200
B450 motherboard £100
Memory as above.

New case if you fancy then add when you feel the need to upgrade further.

Funny my last big upgrade was about the same time as yours, although I upgraded my 970gtx to a 5700xt last Christmas.

I'm doing a upgrade now thou,

Basically new case, cpu, mem, Nvme, water aio.

For you figure I would upgrade the gpu as I please.
I'd maybe a b550 board, msi gaming Pro 140ish, 32 gigs ram 100ish, 3700x 290, cheap aio or air cooler 50ish.

Thats about 600+- reusing case, 970gtx and drives.
Future upgrade paths equal = future PCIe 4 Nvme drive, new gpu.

The 970gtx is still a good card, I don't want to sell mine.

Isn't the B450 an AMD motherboard? What would be the Intel alternative?
