Rip to the kids and teachers.

Hopefully some sanity can be introduced to there ownership laws to prevent obvious autists and the mentally ill from possessing guns (obviously the illegal market is a lost cause - but how can guys like this be allowed to buy guns legally).

There has never been a single case of American citizens taking up arms against their own government and successfully defeating the US military. It is literally impossible, they would be obliterated in minutes.
They successfully fought for their land against the British, that's the basis for the Second Amendment. Most of the military are themselves pro-gun, they are less likely to shoot their own people, so no they wouldn't get obliterated in minutes.

If Americans are so obsessed with owning a gun, then why can't they change the laws so its just a pistol they can own, why do they need assault rifles.
It's a semi-auto rifle, not assault rifle. In the deadliest school shooting (Virginia Tech), the perpetrator used pistols. Banning rifles wouldn't do a thing.

They're considered a basic right in America because it is part of their checks and balances, so that if someone in power were to ever go too far then the people would be able to resist a tyrannical government with force, so people only being allowed to own pistols doesn't really fulfil that criteria.

That's the interpretation of the amendment which has been twisted in the courts by the gun lobby.

Again nothing is going to change.

No, it's how it's written. Read the The Federalist Papers if you want an insight into why the Second Amendment is there.

Guns are intrinsically tied to far too many Americans sense of self worth and ego to ever ban. Look at all the fat ***** who like to play commando over there and own enough guns for a small town. Its sad and pathetic but it plays into their power fantasy that if someone came into their homes they would go all John Wayne on them and be a hero.

It is pretty well understood that the purpose of the second amendment is a check and balance on government, which part has been twisted?

Simple, add another "amendment"
Many things people take for granted now were amendments to old laws

Slavery generated four amendments. The 13th Amendment, ratified in 1865, abolished slavery. The 14th Amendment was adopted in 1868 to protect the civil rights of former slaves. It granted citizenship to all people born in the United States. Two years later, the 15th Amendment declared that the right to vote shall not be abridged on account of race or previous condition of servitude.

The 16th Amendment (1913) authorized an income tax, which the Supreme Court had declared unconstitutional in 1895.

The 19th Amendment extended the vote to women.

The 22nd Amendment, adopted in 1951, limited presidents to two terms.

The 26th Amendment, adopted in 1971, extended the vote to 18 year-olds.

It would significantly reduce the severity of the injuries, being shot with a pistol is far more survivable than being shot by a rifle.
