I have the following system, al bought from OCUK initially in DEcember 2015 with a 980Ti but then upgraded to a 2080 3-4 years ago.

X99 17 59829K, 32GB 2333 RAM, EVGA 2080, Asus X99 Deluxe motherboard. I also have a couple of M.2 ssds and a hard dive. This is all in a Fractal C case with an H110 GT aio cooler.

What would be the best upgrade path for me? I use an Acer X34 monitor and feel that modern games like MW2 are feeling a little 'bitty' when playing them and I can't use full Ultra, etc for graphics.

Is there a gpu/mobo combo that would allow the system to run faster? Also, is the 2080 I have able to be replaced with a better card without selling a kidney?

I kind of feel that after 7 years there must be something that would be a marked improvement without breaking the bank.

Yes and No to those two questions! Still a decent rig. At that res maybe a s/h 3080 is the answer and best bang for buck? No idea on extent of bottleneck, bound to be some though.
 
I was thinking that the GPU would be the only real upgrade that would be sensibly priced as opposed to getting a whole new system. Maybe I should look at used gpus.

The GPU you have now, the EVGA 2080, is still a very powerful GPU and can run most games well even by today's standards, but newer options like the Nvidia GeForce RTX 3070, RTX 3080 and RTX 3090 could offer a significant performance boost. They are all faster than the EVGA 2080, but they also have a higher price point.

As for the motherboard, you have an X99 Deluxe, which is a very solid motherboard that is still compatible with newer processors. However, if you decide to go for a newer processor (like the 11th gen Intel Core processors), you will need to get a new motherboard as the X99 is for the older Haswell-E processors.

It's worth noting that upgrading the GPU and motherboard alone will not be enough, you will need to check your power supply unit and make sure it provides enough power for the new components, it should be at least 650W for the latest RTX series.

In terms of RAM, 32GB is plenty and you don't need to upgrade it, but if you wish to boost your system a bit more, you could consider updating to faster RAM, but that isn't necessary for gaming performance.

As for the AIO cooler you have, the H110 GT, it should be enough to keep the new GPU cool, but do check the compatibility between the new GPU and the cooler, some new graphics card are thicker than the previous generation and might not fit in some cases.

Lastly, before making any upgrade, It's always a good idea to check the compatibility between the different components you want to upgrade with your existing parts and make sure everything will work together, also check your budget and make sure you can afford the upgrade.

I guess at some point that Haswell E will need a refresh, reason being even a £250 i5 13500 has twice the single thread performance and is still 6 core (well, 14 total)
Shame you are on G Sync as AMD gpu's do really well for the cash on MW2, anyhow, gpu wise, here's the issue:
