Struggling to decide which GPU to pair with a 4K 144hz monitor. I want a good ownership experience, minimal headaches and a quiet card. CPU is Zen4 if that matters.

4080 draws less power than a XTX, but an AIB card like the Nitro is very well made and quiet. I haven’t checked but I’m sure I’ve read it’s quieter than a 4080 FE despite its higher power draw.

I’ve got a 4090 FE and a 7900 XT Nitro, I like them both.

I think the drivers on AMD’s cards are generally brilliant these days, they’ve come on leaps and bounds. But the Nvidia drivers probably edge it slightly.

Also, interested to see what you put together LiE, you seem to like building PC’s even more than me haha. First one of the year?!

First one of 2023 yup! Will definitely share the finished build.

It's all down to ray tracing.

I got my eyes on the 4080 because of ray tracing, so I just need the prices to start dropping. Plenty of stock available, so prices will have to drop if Nvidia/AMD want sales!

I'd say that's more like 70% brand/model and only 30% which one of your two choices (and the 30% is mostly usage dependent).

I would go nvidia if i wanted a better chance of a quiet card. I had a 6950 and 6900 and both made a buzzing noise

I take it you missed the 40 series coil whine thread? It seems virtually every card this gen has it to some degree.

Because it does work very well in many games I think DLSS 3 with Frame generation means I'd go the 4080. Heard some people saying FG does a really good job, I'm just not playing any games that need it. Like DLSS it looks better implemented on some games more than others.

If we take the 'Crysis' of RT - CP2077. It keeps up with a 4090 at WQHD, and at 4k whilst the 4090 shows it's edge, is a good whack more than even a 3090ti.

AMD cards do have a good answer to DLSS with FSR, but don't have FG and are currently a fair bit behind this gen with RT still. 4080's tech will give it more legs in future games with those technologies vs the xtx and hold more value when it's 2nd hand due to those.

Then we have the prices - AMD card a good £150+ cheaper - so the technologies aren't a free - extra. The call is - are they worth £150-£200 - less so if you aren't bothered with RT.

Very carefully priced between AMD & NV, really making us pay for every tech, even fps considering the 4090.

Looks like they benefit really well from SAM.

It works pretty well on Nvidia too (Resizable BAR), though I believe the whitelist of games it works with is rather small and needs some quick manual editing to add that (that used to be the case at least, please correct me if I'm wrong!).

It's a tough choice!

I'd also add SAM, FSR and Radeon Image Sharpening as definite pluses for AMD. However, I'd also add HDR recording for Nvidia as a plus with Shadowplay.
